Looking For a National Security Degree or an Intelligence Degree…But Where to Go?
Right now is probably the best time in recent history to enroll in and work towards a national security degree or an intelligence degree. The United States has always had enemies across the globe; however, in the modern world these enemies are more cunning and challenging than they used to be. In times past, small terrorist groups (particularly ones which were poorly funded) would have a hard time mounting an attack against the United States. Today with our global community, it is so much easier to travel (and therefore launch attacks) around the world.
Even use of the internet has increased the capabilities of terrorist groups. Now extremist groups can manipulate media stories, use sites like YouTube to spread their propaganda, host their own propaganda sites, and utilize social media sites to gain new recruits and even to raise money. However, as with any weapon, such sites can be used both by a group and against it as well. So while terrorist groups use the internet to raise money and members to fight us, law enforcement and intelligence specialists can use the internet to obtain a national security degree or intelligence degree. Today there are actually a number of highly qualified higher education institutions which offer both a national security degree and an intelligence degree completely (or partially) online.
These educational institutions mark a new era in the world of defending the United States. Now working professionals who probably do not have the time to go back to school fulltime can use the power of the internet to obtain a degree in an extremely vital field of study. The schools offer a unique twist on the educational process, because not only are many of these schools offering virtual campuses, but are now offering these types of degrees. Busy professionals can even study part-time towards a degree, thus allowing themselves to continue working while taking classes.
If this has been something which has been interesting you, then you really need to start looking into what it would take for you to join the world of intelligence and/or national security. Now, of course, just obtaining a degree won’t allow you to walk through the door of the Pentagon and become an instant secret agent. There are many career fields, however, which are vital to national security and many career opportunities in these fields. Perhaps you could find and then work your way into one of those exciting and immensely important careers by way of one of these new online programs.
If this does interest you, make sure that you are honest with yourself. Know who you are and what you are capable of doing. Understand that in this genre of work, a degree alone is simply not going to cut it. You also need to make sure that you fully vet and research the potential school that you are interested in. Be sure to research the faculty biographies and you should be fine. Good luck in your new career. America will thank you.
