Mattress Quality: What Matters?
When it comes to mattress quality, what are the things that matter? Does a bigger-sized mattress also mean longer-lasting?
A good, quality mattress should last regular bed sleepers (there are those who sometimes end up sleeping on the couch-or worse, on the floor) for around 5-15 years, depending on a number of factors, of course. However, if you find yourself constantly complaining about bad backs or poking springs every couple of years, you know that there might be something wrong.
The Thickness of the Foam
Whether you get a single, double, king or queen-sized mattress won\’t account for its lifespan, but generally speaking, the thickness of its foam will. The foam of a mattress is the material that will initially catch your weight, so if you are a heavy person, much of the abuse is absorbed by the foam.
Most people forego getting mattresses with thick foams because they have the idea that a thicker foam will mean a rock hard mattress. That\’s not necessarily so. Quality mattresses have several layers of foam with varying degrees of thickness that altogether can bring support and comfort to the person sleeping on top. So while you\’re getting a thick mattress, it can still be either soft, medium, medium-firm, or firm.
Mattress Quality Depends on the Number of Springs or Coils
Remember when you were a child, and you couldn\’t resist jumping up and down on top of your bed despite the risk of getting a scolding from your parents? The reason they forbid you to do so is because you could damage the springs inside the mattress, causing them to poke through the foam and fabric and cause discomfort when sleeping.
Springs are the necessary bottommost layer inside a mattress, because the springs are the ones that will give the most support for a person\’s weight. This is why in choosing a mattress, the more springs and coils it has, the sturdier and the longer the lifespan it has.
You can check for a mattress\’ spring and coil count by either asking the sales personnel or by checking the tag sewn or printed onto the mattress. Most manufacturers have that kind of information printed onto the label along with the warranty, so you could check that as well.
TLC
Lastly, the quality of a mattress will also depend on how much care and attention it gets from its owner. Even the sturdiest mattress can break down in just a few years if not properly taken care of. A heavy user will run a mattress down faster than a lighter one, definitely, but a heavy user who takes care of his mattress may have better chances than a lightweight person who\’s not so careful with his.
You can prolong the lifespan of your mattress if you rotate and flip sides once every 3 months or so. If you keep sleeping in the same side of the mattress, obviously that side will wear out faster than the rest. Rotating which side of your mattress is the head part and switching sleeping from the left and right sides will balance out the strain.
Sleep Soundly
Sleep is an important part of every person\’s life, so getting a good night\’s sleep is important. Investing in a good mattress isn\’t quite so difficult if you know the things to look for that accounts for the mattress quality.
