Minimalism and Veganism
Vegans do not eat animals or animal products for 3 reasons:
Kindness to Animals
Kindness to the planet
Better health
Sometimes it’s for one or two reasons and sometimes for all three.
Being a vegan means you have less of a destructive impact on the planet. This is because breeding and raising animals for eating drains the earth of all it’s resources 90% faster than growing plants to eat. Not to mention all the polution it causes from things like all the animal feceas and the rise in green house gases.
Eventually most vegans, even those who don’t start out with the intention of lessening their environmental impact, choose to do so because being a vegan and living a minimalist lifestyle go hand in hand.
Better for your health
A plant-based diet is always better for your health, especially if you always eat organic food. The best food of all is what you can grow in your own garden. That way there is no transportation needed and food is more nutrient dense if it’s freshly picked. The same goes for organic food that you buy. It has more nutrients and is therefore not only better for you but also fills you more so you eat less.
Many poeple think that buying organic food is expensive. And while I may look to be expensive, because you don’t need as muchto be full, you actually end up eating less.
So it is possible to eat healthy organic food while at the same time saving money or not spending any more money because you don’t need to buy as much.
Better for the animals
There’s no denying that being a vegan is better for the animals because non have to be intensely farmed or slaughtered.
Meat is also very expensive to buy. For the same amount of money that you would pay to buy just one steak, you could buy a whole month’s worth of soya mince, beans, lentils and and vegetables.
Many vegans also don’t keep pets for the reason of cruelty. Keeping pets also means that we need to buy more in order to give them a decent life, which can sometimes also mean buying meat (especially with cats as they cannot survive without eating meat) which goes against every vegan principle.
Keeping less pets, or no pets, is also more economical and so falls into the principles of minimalism.
Better for the planet
Growing or buying organic food is better for the planet and so is not polluting by raising animals for slaughter.
Growing your own food is better for you too in several ways. It gets you out in the garden more with your hands touching the soil and it provides healthy nutricious food for the whole family.
Even if you live in an apartment and you only have a small balcony, it’s still possible to quite quite a bit of food in pots. For example, you could grow peas, runner beans and cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets, small lettuce and radish in tubs and even potatoes in large pots. You just need to use your imagination and it’s surprising what you can do. There is also a plethora of information on the internet about it. Try http://gardening.about.com/od/vegetablepatch/a/ContainerVeggie.htm for starters.
Being a minimalist has less of an impact on the planet than any other way of living. And when you’re also a vegan it makes an even bigger difference, not only to the planet but also to your wallet.
When you buy things like peas, beans and lentils, it’s surprising how many different dishes you can make just from these 3 basic ingredients. And what you make will be surprisingly filling, economical and delicious.
Living minimally also means you own less material possessions and so spend less time maintaining them and less time shopping to buy more.
And when you buy less ‘stuff’ and less food you’ll have more time for the things that you’d rather be doing.
So if you’re a minimalist or a vegan, why not try marrying the two and have an even happier and healthier life.
