Moving Home on a Budget

Not many people like the process of moving home. There is so much to organise and things to sort out that it can be quite daunting. Moving home is considered one of the most stressful activities you can do in your life time. If you’re on a tight budget it can feel even more stressful, so here are some tips on saving money on the actual move day itself:

Get more than one quote

This can be the same for buying any service really, it is always best to have more than one quote to go by. You may end up using a dearer service if you feel comfortable with the company. But if money is the main issue, contact as many as you can and ask if they can beat your previous quote. Always ask if there are any discounts and when choosing the mover I would be tempted to ask for testimonial or ask for recommendations from friends. Man and van services are much cheaper than the larger removal companies and they do just the job just as professional as the larger companies. But again do get more than one quote as you can bet there will be more than one man and van set ups in your area.

Do the packing yourself and have a clear out

Many removal companies will over to do the packing and unpacking for you. But if you do this yourself you will save money. When you’re packing you should be ruthless and have a good old throw out. Or box up all the stuff you don’t use or haven’t used for the past year and have a boot sale. You could open up your garage and sell unwanted items there. Put a notice up around the neighbourhood and you will be surprised at the amount of people which will be looking for a bargain. Remember this is your junk so price the items low and they will sell.

Do the lot yourself

You could hire a van and do the lot yourself. This might involve a few trips but the savings will be huge. You could ask friends and family to help fill the van and then unpack the other end. You could thank your friends by supplying food and refreshments. Even if you do use a company that does most of the work, you are still going to want drinks and food to keep you going. Having sandwiches made and a flask of drink will stop you going off to buy food and drink.

The best tip from the above is the clearing out one. If you are downsizing in your home then you will have to have a clear out. You will be amazed at the amount of things we accumulate over the years. If you think about all the things you buy throughout the year it is far more than we actually throw away. So moving house whether you are downsizing or not will be a great way to have a sort out and get rid of all the things that are just clogging up your cupboards and space. A move to a new house is like a new chapter in your life beginning, so out with the old, in with the new.
