It is a good thing that there are several methods that a person can use whenever a friend, relative or stranger is having a panic attack. These attacks last five to twenty minutes and may seem that the sufferer is having a heart attack.
Although panic attacks will not cause death, there are some exceptions wherein a person may die from a panic attack if he has asthma or a disease like arrhythmia. Also, feeling overly excited can be fatal to a person suffering from tachycardia. Be as it may, majority of cases show that a person’s mind can trick him into believing that he is dying. Additionally, a panic attack will manifest itself if too much adrenalin and cortisol are released by the body. Still, it has to be emphasized that no one has died due to a panic attack.
What to Do When One has a Panic Attack
When a person is suffering from a panic attack, it is best that other people help the former in seeking medical treatment. This is necessary for people who are suffering from asthma, diabetes or other medical issues. Secondly, since people do not know what to do when you are having a panic attack, it would be advisable to talk to the victim and confirm if he is suffering from that anxiety disorder. Once the victim confirms his condition, he should be taken away and let him relax in a quiet location. In the event that he relaxes, the one who helped him should ask if he needs assistance.
On the other hand, people may encounter a panic attack sufferer who wants to escape immediately. The victim should not be allowed to go anywhere because he may hurt himself. Furthermore, the individual should be calmed down but should never be held or restrained. Instead, he can lie still, go for a walk, resort to jumping jacks, or simply move around. Also, the person helping the victim should speak in a firm voice yet assuring him that he is there to help.
Do’s and Don’ts in Dealing with a Panic Attack Victim
Helping a panic attack victim is very commendable, but dismissing his fears is a different story or a big mistake. A person must never forget that panic attack sufferers feel that their lives are in danger at that moment. It is advisable to tell the victim that everything is all right and he should breathe deeply. Speaking to the victim in a neutral tone of voice will help him become calmer and make him realize that his flashbacks from the past will not endanger him. In conclusion, some individuals will not know what to do when you are having a panic attack, but being calm will enable them to be of assistance.
