Scuba Diving and Decompression
Each scuba diver have to know the basic principles of decompression sickness. The basic principle is that nitrogen dissolved in the blood under certain conditions and forms bubbles that block blood flow. The relationship between the separated gas and liquid is directly proportional to its partial pressure at its surface.
If too much nitrogen is rapidly released from the tissues during the rapid ascent all the micro bubbles do not have time to get out of the capillaries and remain in the circulatory system and their number is increasing rapidly in the blood. During the ascent, as the fall of the external pressure, tissue oversaturated with nitrogen, which are rapidly beginning to stand out. It is only natural that the nitrogen flowing into the zone of low pressure.
Triggering Factors of Decompression Sickness
Decompression may cause permanent injury to bones and joints. The mechanisms vary and complex and those who violate the safety rules deliberately exposing themselves to danger. Those who are permanently connected with diving need to realize that.
Circulatory
The human body distributes and controls the blood flow to various organs and body parts, depending on the particular condition. Violation of the regulation of blood circulation under the water can lead to the Decompression Sickness.
Age
Aging is reflected in the weakening of all biological systems, including cardio – vascular and respiratory, and hence in lowering the efficiency of blood flow, cardiac function, etc,
Cold
In cold water the body cools and results blood flow slowed. To eliminate this factor divers need to wear a warm wetsuit.
Dehydration
Dehydration is a major factor and it should be addressed. Dehydration reflected in a reduction in blood volume, which leads to an increase in its viscosity and slow circulation. It is recommended to drink plenty of water before and after diving. Some people wake up the morning after the holiday with a headache and a dry throat. Both symptoms are not just a consequence of alcohol intoxication, but the result of dehydration of tissues.
Exercise
Exercise before diving cause the formation of an active \”silent\” bubbles, irregular blood flow dynamics and education in the circulatory system of zones with high and low pressure. Experiments with astronauts have shown that the number of micro bubbles in the blood significantly decreased after a rest in the supine position.
Sex
Women are more prone to decompression sickness than men.
Obesity
Anyone who overweight has an increased susceptibility to decompression sickness, because of their elevated blood fat content which enhances the formation of gas bubbles.
Conclusion
Scuba diving is a sport with risks, like every other sport. What makes scuba diving seem riskier than other sports is the fear associated with drowning and the nervousness using a scuba system as \”life support\”. Many people are afraid of water, afraid of sharks, afraid of relying on a strange contraption of hoses and tanks to provide air in an airless environment. In reality, scuba diving is not as dangerous as people seem to believe and in those rare instances of a scuba fatality it is almost always shown diver recklessness was the cause. Why scuba diving even makes it on the list is a mystery. The statistics just don\’t support the assumption. Scuba diving is not dangerous compared to some other activities we do without hesitation. The one kind of scuba diving that makes it onto the \”most dangerous\” list is cave diving. Granted, there are a lot of things that can go wrong during a cave dive. That\’s why you have to get trained to learn how to do it properly. Injuries and fatalities do occur in cave diving, even sometimes to people who are properly trained and prepared. But, by far, most scuba diving injuries happened to the ignorant, reckless and irresponsible divers. With proper training a scuba diver is confident. He is prepared, responsible, knows the risks and how to avoid them. Scuba diving, to the properly trained, is not dangerous compared to most other banal activities we do without hesitation.
