Tips on How to Do Yoga at Home
Yoga is an amazing practice because it calms the mind and is great for the body. However, not everyone has the time to drop by the gym to attend yoga classes. The alternative to this would be to practice yoga at home.
Here are some things to keep in mind before you learn how to do yoga at home.
Learning how to do yoga at home is very convenient since you do not have to travel to the gym and you are more comfortable in your environment. However, since it is your territory, there is a tendency to be lax; especially if you will be practicing alone. Since you do not have to leave your house, it is easier to put off because the thinking is, “I can always do it here.”
At the beginning, lay out the details of your program. First of all, understand your goals. Why do you want to practice yoga? If you decided to do yoga for fun, later on when you start to experience some aches and pains you might quit right away. If you do not have a goal yet, research on the benefits of yoga and choose one or more that you want to accomplish. Examples of these goals are weight loss, flexibility and stronger legs. Having a goal in mind helps keep you motivated and carry you through your program.
Next, figure out how much of your time you can dedicate to practicing yoga. Set a realistic amount of time so you can stick to it. If you feel tired after working all day, can you wake up earlier to do some poses? If you have a long lunch break, can you find a place to do some poses undisturbed? You can always make time for yoga. If you do not have a full hour to give, even just 15-minute sessions can help. Start with practicing yoga 3 times a week to let your body get used to it and then later on you can choose to do it more often.
Find a spot in your house where you can practice yoga without any distractions and interruptions. If you share a room with a family member, you can talk to him or her to give you time to have the room for yourself. Make sure to choose a space with floor area that can accommodate your whole body so you don’t hit anything while doing poses. Make sure that you do not slip while you are doing poses, so try some stretches on the floor first. Carpeted floors work well but you can use a yoga mat if the hard floor is uncomfortable.
Next, prepare your yoga resources. There are free yoga videos online that you can stream or download. You may also opt to purchase yoga DVD’s. Will you be viewing it on a handheld device or will you play it on a huge screen? Either way, make sure that you can view it properly and it will not restrict your movements. Aside from videos, there are also written instructions for yoga poses that you can follow.
Now, put on some comfortable clothing and get your yoga mat. You can choose to put some soothing music in the background to help get you to relax. Take a deep breath and you are now ready to learn how to do yoga at home.
