Your first action will be to keep the injury from becoming more serious. Stopping all activity is important. If the injury is on a limb, you have to immobilize that limb. Also take note that you have to protect that body part from any unnecessary movement. The person may be writhing and pain but you have to make sure that the affected body part is secured and immobilized as soon as possible.
If there is no obvious external injury, the affected part should be immediately rested. This can help tissues to heal. Minor injuries can be relieved in as short as a span of several minutes. If you want to avoid further injuries, you have to stop what you are doing and consider taking a time out or sitting on the bench for a while.
Cold therapy is important to reduce swelling in the affected area. Use an ice pack and place it directly above the affected part. This might also be helpful in relieving the pain that you are feeling. Bleeding can be reduced as ice or the cold temperature causes the blood vessels to constrict. This can result in reduced blood flow to the area.
Intermittent application of ice can be more effective. Remove the ice pack after 10-15 minutes. After several minutes and after color has started to return to the area, you can reapply the ice pack. You would want to reduce pain and swelling but you do not want to permanently injure that body part. After 24 hours, you have to check if warm compress can be applied as well in order to reduce inflammation.
Wrap the injured part snugly. Use a clean cloth or an elastic bandage if one is available. This can reduce swelling. It will also help immobilize the part. Make sure that the bandage is applied correctly. You have to be able to reduce swelling. But, you wouldn’t want to completely restrict blood flow into that area.
If you see that there is bleeding, you have to elevate that body part. Place it at a level that is above of the heart. If you are able to do this, you can reduce the amount of blood that is eliminated from the body. Take note that as much as 500 cc of blood loss can mean that the person is in a serious medical condition.
After initial measures have been taken, you have to take the person to the nearest hospital. They may be able to provide the necessary measures. Surgery or stitches to the injured tissues might need to be done. In order to restore normal function to the body part, rehabilitation will be necessary. Adjunct therapeutic measures might be important to reduce pain and improve the overall function of the affected body part.
