Use the Force, Luke: Hospitality Job Searching the Jedi Way
There is a great disturbance in the Force: You\’re out of a job. But never fear-Star Wars is here with plenty of good advice. Take a cue from these Jedi masters and begin your hospitality job search like a true padawan.
“You want to go home and rethink your life.”
(Obi-Wan Kenobi to Death Stick Dealer, Episode II: Attack of the Clones)
Take time before starting your search to get clear on what you want. What makes you happy in a job? What do you want to avoid? What are your strengths? Your weaknesses? Is your resume in good shape? Make sure you know what you want, then go after it.
“In my experience, there is no such thing as luck.”
(Obi-Wan Kenobi to Han Solo, Episode IV: A New Hope)
A hospitality job search is serious business, and you can\’t sit back and hope the latest-greatest hospitality job search website will solve all your problems. Engage in some “aggressive negotiations” and treat your search as full-time employment. Set goals, like applying for at least five jobs each day or interviewing for a new job at least twice a week, and stick to them.
“Use the Force, Luke.”
(Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker, Episode IV: A New Hope)
Use whatever resources you have at your disposal. Great intuition? Follow it. Awesome connections? Use them. If you\’re great with words, craft brilliant cover letters. If you\’re better at selling yourself visually, build a stellar online portfolio where you can showcase your skills through colors and images. If you\’re great at making friends, focus on networking. Figure out whatever “Force” is strongest in your life, then run with it.
“Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.”
(Han Solo to Luke Skywalker, Episode IV: A New Hope)
Know your strengths, but stay humble. There\’s always more you can learn, so keep your arrogance down and be ready to take criticism with a smile. Be honest about your qualifications: If you\’re new at something, admit it, but compensate by demonstrating that you\’re ready and eager to improve.
“I sense great fear in you, Skywalker. You have hate, you have anger, but you don’t use them.”
(Count Dooku to Anakin Skywalker, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith)
Anakin ended up using his hate, and look where he ended up. Keep a lid on your negative emotions. Don\’t complain about old employers on Facebook or in interviews. Stay positive and bring your best self to your job search. Hospitality employers will appreciate your optimism and you\’ll enjoy your job search more as you focus on the good things.
“Do, or do not. There is no try.”
(Yoda to Luke Skywalker, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back)
As the ultimate Jedi master points out, there\’s no point in doing things halfway. Applying for one job a week won\’t get you anywhere, and neither will a resume riddled with typos and spelling errors. Approach your hospitality job search with total commitment. Target your applications, be professional and confident during interviews, maintain your optimism, and press forward until your job search pays off. And may the Force be with you!
