Ways to Keep Your Digestive System Healthy

As we go through with our lives we are often unaware of the \”daily grind\” that also occurs within us, particularly in our digestive system. Everyday, as we have take our meals or snacks we often take the process that happens inside us for granted. But what it actually does is that it allows us to get the nutrients that we need therefore being able to function well. But for you to really appreciate how the importance of proper digestion, let’s take a closer look into the process and how it can benefit us.

The process of digestion takes place the moment you chew your food. This mechanical process brings the food to the first stage of breakdown. And this is actually a very important process because the better you chew your food, the more it is to be digested more later on in the process. That is why you should always chew your food well and simply gorge it in loads.

If you think that this state will already nourish you with the nutrients that you need, then you are wrong. The food still needs to go to the stomach where further breakdown is done and digestive juices or acids are released to make the certain components in food readily available for the body for absorption.

Only a small percentage of the nutrients derived from the digestion in the stomach is absorbed. Now the digested material from the stomach is then emptied next into the small intestine where further digestion is done. The acidity of the digested food that came from the stomach triggers the liver and the pancreas to release their respective enzymes which are bile and pancreatin. In addition to that the pancreas also releases bicarb to neutralize the pH of the small intestine as the food is being processed here.

The importance of the enzymes found in the small intestine is that they help breakdown the carbohydrate content to sugar, hydrolyze or liquefy fat, and then breakdown protein to amino acids. At these state they are much easier to be absorbed by the minute hair-like projections lining the small intestine, called the microvilli. They help transport nutrients, for example amino acids, into the bloodstream, and then to different parts of the body.

The waste products go further into the large intestine and then into the anus for excretion.

But what should be highlighted here is the process that occurs within the stomach and small intestine. Aside from the mentioned enzymes above, there are at least 2,000 more that are in body that helps in further breaking down your food into nutrients or usable energy by the body.

But when something goes wrong within the digestive system, indigestion can result, and this can be evidenced as malabsorption, bloating, belching, flatulence, stomach gas, acid reflux, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome.

Other unfortunate effects of indigestion include an impaired ability of the body to regulate its temperature, poor energy production, and number of other related health issues.

One of the ways for you to correct this problem is to take digestive supplements. It assists your body in regaining good digestion so it can properly break down food and absorb nutrients.

Natural digestive supplements are available in the market today and they usually contain fruits such as limes, kiwi, or pineapples. Along with your natural enzymes, these supplements help to gain back normalcy in food digestion.

The better the food is digested, the better the nutrients are released and obtained by the body, therefore resulting to optimum functioning and better health.
