What is Strategic Security and Why is it Taught in Corporate Security Education?
Security is one of the base levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, second only to food and shelter being primary to human existence. Security means to feel safe from predators, safe to move higher up the human needs ladder, pursuing feelings of belonging and increased self esteem. In the business world the same concepts apply, only instead of wild animals, strategic security is used to defend against the threats to the financial security of the organization. Corporate security education is the first step in understanding the concepts needed to protect from attacks against the organization.
Strategic security is a relatively new term that encompasses many aspects of protection operations. However, in the next five years, the Government is expected to hire over 63,000 new employees in the strategic security industry. Past terms that have been used in attempting to define the concepts of security have fallen quite short of what the training is really about. Bodyguard, executive or corporate security, and personal protection have all been terms used to describe what is actually happening during a protection operation. Each term falls short as protection operations require the use of many aspects and simple physical security terms cannot cover them all.
No matter what term is used, the various aspects of physical security require significant training and understanding of the concepts of each, but for the security specialist something more is required. Strategic security is knowing when and how to implement the many security options in an efficient and effective manner.
Corporate security education is a key step on the path to security expertise. When a person first starts learning about security, he or she may feel they have a good handle as to what security is. The joy (and sometimes shock) comes soon after starting an education program when a person realizes how little he or she really knows about the security industry. Security education has so many avenues in which to learn, it can sometimes be overwhelming. Fortunately, many instructors who teach classes are very involved and offer continuous support and encouragement in the student’s endeavors.
As security education progresses, the over-lapping of the security concepts begins to be understood and the student begins to see how they complement each other. As the education progresses so does the student’s ability to recognize the potential threat and address it in a cost effective manner. Much of what is learned in corporate security education is designed to be multiple layers of protection, but none are one size fits all. Each “principle” has individual needs of which strategic security aims to address.
Security is a key fundamental need of all humans and business. With business being a living “creature,” security plays a role in its ability to grow and prosper. Strategic security takes the many aspects of security and attempts to create security features designed around the protectee, no matter how big or small. Corporate security education is a proven method of training that provides the knowledge not only in the specific security skills, but how they work together to create the desired synergistic effect.
