What is the Importance of PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing or PAT testing is a legal requirement that necessitates all businesses in the UK to test every portable electric appliance for safety. Since faulty appliances can seriously damage your health and your property, one area that needs much attention is the safety of your portable electrical items. Portable basically means any appliance with a plug that can be easily moved around such as computers, coffee pots, floor heaters, and water coolers.

Any business owner in the UK knows that the Health & Safety inspectors may visit at any time to determine if safety measures are put in place in order to prevent or minimise health and safety risks. The rule is simple; if you fail to comply with the regulations set by the Health & Safety Executive, you must be ready to face prosecution.

You need to get the test done, or you\’ll get a fine. You have to follow the rules to avoid throwing away money. It\’s worthy to note that the regulation of testing portable appliances does not only apply to the appliances used by your employees and you, but it\’s also applicable to small appliances that your customers use within your premises. You rely on these appliances to run your business so you will want them to properly work for you. You don\’t have to wait till an appliance catches on fire that will damage your property or electrocutes an employee or a customer before testing it. You can stop any untoward electric-related accident or fire by testing your appliances before using them.

Portable Appliance Testing is not a once-a-year task. Throughout the year, there will be times when you need to bring new electrical appliances into your premises if you want a damaged appliance replaced or you need to use new electrical items. They should need to be run through a PAT test. Conducting PAT testing procedure is not only a good practice, but more insurance companies would also want to determine if the test has been carried out. Should you claim for fire damage, these insurance companies would want to find out if you really did all you could to protect everything and everyone within your premises, and that would include Portable Appliance Testing.

Since PAT testing is a requirement in the UK, you may hire a consulting company to do the testing for you, or you may consider training anyone to conduct an in-house test. You can save a considerable amount of money in the long run if you purchase PAT tester equipment and train a member of your staff to use them than getting the services of a consulting firm to do the test for you. You are not required by the law to hire a professional consulting firm to do the job but having professionals to do the job ensures more accurate results, considering the high-tech equipment that the PAT experts use. PAT testing will ensure that the appliances you are using are safe for your employees, your customers, your property and you.
