What You Should Never Wear on Your First Day of Work
Starting a new job is nerve wrecking enough because you are not only going somewhere new you are also making an impression on people. The first day of your new job is generally the hardest as you do not know what is expected of you and you feel like everyone is watching you. One way to ensure that you make a good impression is to dress the part. So the question is what should you not wear on your first day of work?
What not to wear
What you can and cannot wear to work will depend on where you are working. There are certain businesses that require their employees to wear a uniform while others allow more casual wear. Most offices will want you to wear formal work clothes. So are there any clothes that you should never wear no matter what work you do?
– Ugg boots are very popular but are not good business wear as many people see them as glorified slippers. This is true even if you are allowed to wear more casual clothing.
– Wearing a hip pack to carry your personal items is another no-go item. It would be better to get a bag that you can put over your shoulder for the sake of professionalism.
– Hoodies are something that many people have but should never go to work in. It is too casual for most jobs and it does not matter if you take it off you still have to get to work in it.
– Leather pants may look great but are not for the office. If you want to change your clothes a bit rather go with skinny black trousers.
– Tops with messages on it. While the company may allow you to wear tee shirts you don’t know how other people will take messages on your clothing.
– Clothing that shows too much skin. When you go to the office you are there to work not to flaunt your body. Keep skin-flashing to a minimum.
– Sandals or flip flops are fine when you are on the beach but simply look scruffy when you are at work.
– Hats are something that you may not realise are not good in an office. The only time you can justify wearing a hat at work is if you work outside and need to shield your eyes.
What constitutes good work wear?
Now that you know a bit about what you shouldn’t wear you may wonder what good work wear is. This type of clothing is generally more formal than what you will normally wear. It includes but is not limited to suits, trousers and shirts. Of course if your company has a formal-casual policy then you can wear a plain less formal top. Jeans are often not a good idea no matter what the dress code.
Wearing the correct clothing is not important only on your first day but for your entire work career. The first day is the most important because you don’t want your boss to remember you as the person who wears the wrong clothes.
