Don\’t settle for run-of-the-mill Grand Canyon helicopter tours. Fly Maverick. This Las Vegas-based air-tour company gives all its customers the VIP treatment as they experience the canyon in comfort, safety and style.

One of the benefits of flying Maverick is the location of its air terminals. One is located on the Las Vegas Strip across from the Mandalay Bay Resort. The other is in Henderson, NV, which is 15 minutes south of town. This might not seem like a big deal, but understand that the majority of Grand Canyon flights leave from Boulder City Municipal Airport, which requires a 30-minute bus ride.

Maverick operates the largest fleet of EcoStar 130 helicopters in the world. This chopper was born for sightseeing. Its cabin is 25 percent bigger than conventional helicopters. Interpretation: You get theater-style seating and a 180-degree wraparound windshield.

Maverick flies to the West Rim and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Its West Rim tours are comprised of aerial and landing tours. I recommend the aerial trips if you are short on time. That said, if you really want to experience the canyon, take a landing tour.

West Rim landing tours are comprised of flights that land at the bottom of the canyon or at the top of the rim. Trips come with a picnic and can be extended to include a boat cruise on the Colorado River. Rim-top trips let you can bundle the Grand Canyon Skywalk (the glass bridge that lets you walk 70 feet past the edge) or an all-access pass to the West Rim’s many attractions.

South Rim tours are bit trickier. There are no direct helicopter flights to this rim. You must take an airplane flight over and then transfer to a helicopter for the rim-to-rim ride. The plane ride, which leaves from Maverick\’s Henderson terminal, is 45 minutes and the views are incredible.

Which rim is for you? Simple. If you want thrills and attractions, do the West Rim. If you want scenic beauty, visit the South Rim. There are no tours that let you visit both rims, and there are no flights between the rims.

One thing to remember is that EcoStars hold up to six passengers. If your group is larger than that, you\’ll get split. I\’ve never found this to be a big deal because you\’ll most likely be in a chopper that leaves at the same time so you\’ll be a mile or two behind the other members of your party.

Maverick tours are all-inclusive. By this I mean they come with everything you need, including shuttle or limousine service to and from your Strip hotel and professional pilot/guide. If you are taking a landing tour, lunch or a picnic is included.

Maverick Helicopters is most definitely a cut above the rest. The company\’s customer service sets the bar. Even its passenger lounges are swanky. If you\’re in the market for a special helicopter ride where everything happens like a stay at the Four Seasons, then Maverick is the choice. But RSVP at your earliest convenience. Luxury travelers love Maverick, so you want to make sure you lock down your flight before they sell out.
