Whenever I go out anywhere with my friends, one of the things we always think about, no matter where we go, is what they bartenders are going to be like. It may not seem like such a big deal for some people, but if you are planning on doing any drinking at all and want to make sure you have a fun night, having a friendly bartender on your side is a big key. Let’s face it – when you are having a good time, you do not want an old sourpuss staring back at you every time you place an order. When I am thinking about what to do in Houston, finding the friendliest bartenders is always near the top of my list.

I am more than willing to go out of my way to find a barkeep that is okay with you having a good time. Sure it means sometimes I end up in a place that I probably would not want to take my mother, but who wants to take your mother out for a night on the town anyway except guys who live in their mother’s basements and play video games all day? We have a lot more fun when we are at a place where the bartender is happy, smiling and great with the service.

The more I think about it, the more I realize how important the bartender can be for me and my friends having a good time. When we hit the town, looking for what to do in Houston, we think about the different places we have been recently and the good times we have had there (assuming we can actually remember the time we had there). One of the things we always talk about is “Hey, remember (insert bartender’s name here)? He was awesome; he took real good care of us.”

When I say “taking care of us,” I mean that the bartender always knows where we are at in the bar. He’ll give a quick look over to where we are and all I need to do is nod and I know he is going to bring us refills without a problem. If he’s really good, he always makes sure my friends and I know exactly where the cute single ladies are as well. Usually he can give a quick hand signal so I know where they are at and can buy them a drink before we make our way over there.

It’s hard to believe that a friendly bartender can make all the difference in having a good night or a bad night, but it is certainly possible. It is one of the reasons that I really only go to certain places in the city. If I want to get surly glances and watered down drinks in dirty glasses, I can go visit my Aunt Agnes on Friday nights.

Next time you are trying to decide what to do in Houston, take a quick inventory of how the bartenders are at the places you want to go. Trust me, it really can make a big difference in your night. Besides, if the bartender is really friendly, you may even be able to get a free drink or two out of it!
