Ways to Promote Your Band
If creating great music was all it took to be a successful band, thousands of new bands would be making it to the big time every day. Unfortunately, the music business is just that, a business, so not only do bands need to be made up of talented musicians, they also need to be or enlist the help of talented business people as well. Proper promotion for you band is one of the most important things you can do to help you get your band out of your parents garage and onto a larger stage. There are several different types of promotion and even more ways to go about it. These are some of the most important people for you to reach out to as a band and some of the best ways to it.
Friends, family, and fans, what I like to call the three F’s are the most important group of people for a band just starting out to reach out to. Many band members are shy about inviting people they know to their shows, but if you are embarrassed to ask your friends to come to your show, you probably should not be asking strangers to pay to come see you.
Building up a solid fan base is very important. You need to play hundreds of shows before you even think about inviting someone from the music industry out to see you. Every show you play will make your set stronger an increase the number of people in your audience. No record executive wants to come see you play a show for your mom.
So, how do you get people to come out to your shows and expand your fan base? Promotion, creating effective promotional materials for every show you play, even if you do not think it is a big deal, is very important. Flyers and posters are two of the best ways to promote a show. Make sure you collect email addresses and if you can, postal addresses for anyone who comes to your shows. If you have their contact information you can thank them for supporting you, and encourage them to come out to your next show, or buy your album. Sending post cards to your fans once a year is a great way to communicate how much you appreciate their support.
Once you have a solid fan base and have created a small buzz in your city or region, you should reach out to local radio stations, and music publications. Sending post cards ahead of your material to let the people who you will be submitting your material to know that it is on the way will increase your chances that they will listen to your music when it arrives. Name recognition for your band is half the battle. Hundreds, and sometimes thousands of bands submit materials every week and you want to make sure your CD ends up at the top of the pile not the bottom.
When you have created a buzz in your region, music industry professionals from record labels, publishing companies, and large management firms may begin to attend your shows. Having professionally printed business cards is the best way for any band to communicate with these professionals.
