3 Ways to Make More Money From Your Writing Without Writing More
The easiest way to make more money from your writing is by repurposing what you’ve already written so that you can earn more money from your writing, without doing any more writing. Why get paid once for doing something if you can get paid twice or even 3 times. And I’ll show you 3 simple ways you can do it.
Writing can be a fickle business sometimes. There are weeks where you’re blown away with how much money you’ve earned from your writing, while there are other weeks where you cannot believe how much less you’ve earned.
And because writing income is usually residual, you never know exactly how much you’re going to earn. But there are ways that you can make sure you earn more money from the writing you do. That way, you can earn more money without doing more writing and I’ll show you 3 ways you can do it.
Freelance Writing. If you write articles or stories for magazines, other print publications or websites, you’re generally given restrictions as to what else you can do with your work. Most publications and website owners want to keep your articles to themselves for as long as they can. So they may place a restriction on your contract stating that they’ll only publish your work if you promise to not sell it to anyone else or publish it elsewhere for at least 6 months or a year.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t republish it or resell it at all. You’re still free to offer it to other places. And because getting your work accepted can take a while (sometimes months) and depending on the publications publishing calendar, by the time they want to publish it your restriction will be over. Or you can simply wait out the time and then start offering it around again.
And if you submit your work internationally, you can offer the same article in the UK with “First British Serial Rights” and offer it in the US for “First American Serial Rights.” That way you’re not cheating anyone and are legitimately getting your work published in different countries at the same time.
Online articles/blog posts. And just because you publish articles on your own website doesn’t mean you can’t make more money out of them. If you have hundreds or thousands of articles on your site that you’ve written over the past few years, it’s perfectly all right to pick the most popular articles and publish them as an ebook.
I know of a few writers who do this already because they know that not everyone will want to spend hours searching through their website for the best articles. So they gather together appropriate ones that are popular and work together as a book and then they package it and sell it as an ebook.
You can also sell PLR articles to make money. PLR stands for Private Label Rights and what this means is that you sell a package of articles (usually on the same topic) and sell them free of copyright.
PLR articles are usually limited to how many people can buy them so that the internet doesn’t get flooded with the same articles. They are usually only sold to around 50 customers or less.
And because they’re copyright free it means the customers are free to do what they want with them and can use them ‘as is’ or change them in any way that suits them and even put their own name to them as the author.
But however they use your PLR articles, it means that you can get paid up to 50 times for the same articles. And if you’re selling lots of packages of PLR articles and selling 50 copies of each, then it can add up to quite a substantial income. But you need to let your customers know upfront how many people you plan on selling them to.
Ebooks. The income from selling ebooks is limitless. You can write and publish them for years.
So how can you make even more money from your ebooks?
You can sell our ebooks in other formats. For instance if you only publish your ebooks in Kindle format, you could also sell them through iTunes and Barnes & Noble or even Smashwords.
And you don’t have to stop at ebooks. You can also use Amazon’s Create Space company or use Lulu.com to sell your ebook as a POD print book. It costs nothing to set up a POD account and it could open up a whole new audience for your books.
Or how about recording yourself reading your ebooks and selling the recording as a downloadable MP3 file? Everyone loses audio books and you could package it with your ebook and up sell it for more money.
You can also do more advertising for your ebooks without doing any more writing by offering yourself for audio interviews. There are plenty of online radio stations looking for authors to interview so you can put yourself on the audio circuit. And recording audio interviews is quick to do because speaking is so much faster than writing and again, it can reach a much wider audience then any of your written marketing.
So if you want to earn more money from your writing without having to do any more writing, use the 3 ideas here to help in the times of writing income famine.
