New York City isn\’t commonly known for being friendly to budget conscious travelers. In fact, the opposite may be true. Many people think of the expensive shops of Fifth Avenue and the luxuries of Manhattan when they hear New York City. Queens, however, is a much less expensive place to visit. Queens is one of the five boroughs of New York City. There are many cheaper alternatives available in Queens than Manhattan. Here are a few of those places.

Learn about science at the New York Hall of Science

The New York Hall of Science has exhibits which are hands-on and interactive. Visitors can play with displays and learn physics, biology, and chemistry. It\’s ideal for families with children.

Admission is relatively cheap. Adults pay $11. Children or students can get in for a reduced $8 fee. The museum has free general admission on certain hours throughout the week. Check their website for the latest information.

Besides the main museum, there\’s also a mini golf area and science playground. Both are great places for children.

Appreciate the art at the Queens Museum of Art

The Queens Museum of Art is worth a visit for the Panorama of the City of New York alone. It\’s a famous art piece depicting New York City. About 9,335 square feet large, the model is a scaled down version of the five boroughs. Amazingly, there are over 895,000 individual structures in the model, accurately depicting all of the buildings in New York City.

Admission to the Queens Museum of Art is donation based. There is a suggested donation of $8 for adults and $4 for children. Exhibitions always vary and feature a diverse set of cultures and ideals. Past exhibits at the museum have focused on theology, coffee, animations, and architecture.

Watch the animals at Queens Zoo

Queens Zoo has animals from the Americas. Habitats have over 75 species including bald eagles, pumas, bison, and alligators. The zoo is much smaller than the Bronx Zoo. It\’s ideal if you\’re short on time and cash. The entire zoo shouldn\’t take more than 2 hours to go through.

Adults pay $8 to get in. Children cost $5. Children also have access to the free petting zoo. The zoo is located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and is easy to get to by public transportation. If you drive here, parking is free.

Relax at the Noguchi Museum

Isamu Noguchi was born in 1904. He was a Japanese American sculptor and artist. He called New York City his home and created public sculptures which were placed on display throughout the city. Collaborating with the Herman Miller Company, Isamu Noguchi created the most influential modern furniture body of work.

Founded in 1985, the Noguchi Museum 2-story building was purchased by Isamu Noguchi. It was only a few blocks away from his home studio. He wanted to preserve his models, sculptures, and art for future generations to see and enjoy. There are 12 galleries for visitors to see.
