If you are about to welcome local movers into your home, you may be wondering what you need to do ahead of time to prepare your home so the moving process is as smooth as possible. You should go through your home and decide what items are sentimental to you and pack these into secure storage boxes, padded on the inside with bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts if possible. You should also consider packing your purse, wallet, keys, driver’s license, passport, and any other items you may need to have handy during the move.

Eliminating items you no longer need: If you have some clothes that haven’t seen the light of day since the disco era or furniture that has been stuffed into the garage for years, maybe now is the time to start purging the items you really no longer want or use. You could go by the one-year rule, which basically means if you haven’t used an item or worn a garment of clothing in over a year, then it is time to discard the item. Hiring a sitter: Whether you have babies crawling around on the floor or Pomeranians prancing around the house, you should hire a trustworthy sitter to care for your little loved ones on moving day. Having a sitter take your children or pets offsite during moving day is the best way to ensure that they will not be in the way (and risk getting hurt inadvertently) when the movers are inside your home doing their work.

Making clear pathways between rooms: The pre-moving day hustle might mean you have boxes, bags, and other items strewn about the house. However, if your home is too messy come moving day, your movers may have a very difficult time moving your belongings out. So, be sure that you have clear, direct paths between all rooms as well as by all exterior doorways, and make sure all windows are unobstructed.

In addition to the tips mentioned above, you also want to make sure you have at least one person at your home come moving day. If you can’t be available on moving day, find someone who is trustworthy and able to help answer any questions your movers may have once they arrive.
