Sporting and Outdoor Entertainment Ideas For Visitors of Oklahoma City
Whether you’re a weekend warrior or you’re looking to sit back and catch a few professional or collegiate sporting events, Oklahoma City provides a variety of sports and outdoor entertainment options for your next visit. With the Oklahoma River flowing just south of the city, there are a number of water sports and outdoor adventures you can embark on while you’re here. Also, the city has a professional basketball team and boasts a number of collegiate teams in and around the greater Oklahoma City area. So, no matter what season it is, there are always sporting and entertainment options for you and your family.
Enjoy the Great Outdoors
Oklahoma River’s Boathouse District is home to the Oklahoma City University rowing and kayaking teams and is the site of numerous regattas throughout the year. Purchase an Adventure Saturday pass from the Chesapeake Boathouse for hourly rentals on kayaks or bicycles, or to go on a daily excursion or guided tour. The SandRidge Sky Trail is a brand new adventure course in the Boathouse District that will provide hours of fun for the whole family. At 80 feet high, the Sky Trail features six levels of challenges including rope ladders, zig-zag beams, and other obstacles.
Outside of the Boathouse District, there are a number of other outdoor activities available while you visit Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is one of the top three family-friendly zoos in the United States and spans over 119 acres. With new exhibits arriving on an annual basis, the Zoo always has exciting adventures for kids and adults alike. Also, the City of Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation maintains over 4,200 acres of park lands for residents and visitors to enjoy, including athletic fields, lakes, nature areas, and walking or biking paths. There are plenty of public golf courses, tennis courts, and playgrounds as well, so the whole family can get outside and enjoy themselves.
Professional and Collegiate Sports
In 2008, the Seattle SuperSonics franchise of the National Basketball Association relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder. Now one of the most dominant teams in the NBA, the Thunder play some of the most electrifying basketball in the league. Also, the recently renovated Chesapeake Energy Arena, which houses the Thunder, offers upscale restaurants, clubs, a Kid’s Zone, and new concessions. Though tickets to a game may be difficult to come by, there isn’t a bad seat in the house, and you’ll be treated to a full night of entertainment and fun.
Just south of Oklahoma City is Norman, Oklahoma, which is home of the University of Oklahoma Sooners. With 153 All-Americans, 44 conference titles, 7 national championships, and 5 Heisman Trophy winners, the Oklahoma Sooners football team has some of the strongest history and tradition in all of college sports. If you can catch a home football game, the crowd at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, which can hold 82,112 people, will help provide the sporting experience of a lifetime.
Equine Events
Oklahoma City is home to more equine events than any other city in the world. The State Fair Park equine and livestock facilities have also been recently renovated to offer state-of-the-art barns, exercise areas, and conference rooms. Horse and livestock shows take place almost every week at the State Fair Park, so make sure you take a look at the upcoming schedule before you plan your next visit.
For the adults, the Remington Park Racing and Casino is open every day of the year and offers live horse racing from Thursday through Sunday during racing season. The casino is also home to Bricktown Brewery, which provides daily drink and food specials. So, whether you want to swing by and place a few bets, or you’re looking for a full day of entertainment, Remington Park is a great place to visit during your stay in Oklahoma City.
