Maverick\’s Luxury Grand Canyon Helicopter Tours
There are a lot of Grand Canyon helicopter tour operators that service the National Park. However, if you are looking a company that does the canyon in style and luxury, you\’ll want to fly with Maverick Helicopters.
From Las Vegas, Maverick goes to the West Rim, and from Tusayan, AZ, they do the South Rim. It needs to be noted that there are no direct flights from Vegas to the South Rim and vice versa. If want such a flight, Maverick offers a terrific airplane package that\’ll whisk you over there in under an hour. To my mind, this is the absolute best option, especially when compared against bus packages that require 5.5 hours of time on the road just to reach the National Park!
One of the most popular perks you get if you go Maverick is the location of their terminals. Depending on the flight you purchase, you\’ll take off right from the Las Vegas Strip or from the Henderson Executive Airport, which is about 15 minutes from the Mandalay Bay. You’ll especially appreciate this once you learn that Maverick’s competitors ship the majority of their clients out to Boulder City Municipal Airport, which requires a 40-minute shuttle ride.
It\’s a little-known fact that Maverick owns and operates the largest fleet of EcoStar 130\’s. These are truly impressive aircraft. For starters, the cabin is up to 25% larger than that found on conventional helis. This extra space also means stadium-style seating, which means that every seat is the best in the house. The other feature I like is the 180-degree wraparound windshield.
Maverick, like its competitors, offers air and landing packages from Las Vegas. Where the company separates from the pack is in the creativity of its trips. In addition to flying to the bottom for a champagne picnic, you can also add on Vegas Strip and Valley of Fire flyovers!
At South Rim, you pick from flights that last 30 or 50 minutes. I always recommend the longer trip. The shorter trip is great if you pressed for time. However, because there\’s so much to see, the extended flight is the one that is the most satisfying. I also want to point out South Rim helicopters do not land at the bottom or below the rim.
Maverick flights are all-inclusive and come with free hotel shuttle service (very important as Vegas traffic can be particularly difficult to navigate), professional guide service, lunch (not applicable to air-only tours) and all National Park taxes and fees. Frankly, I\’m a huge fan of package tours like this because I don\’t enjoy doing trip logistics during my vacation.
Maverick Helicopters isn\’t the cheapest option but they are the best, and they are one company where I feel comfortable telling you that you get more than you pay for. The trick to ensuring a great deal is to book your tour on their website. This will get you the Internet rate, which is much cheaper than retail.
I also recommend booking these trips at least a week in advance. In addition to you and me, there are lots of other travelers who want quality, 5-star air tours, so these flights often sell out way in advance. It\’s also smart to avoid same-day reservations. Just like commercial airlines, tour operators like Maverick charge more for them.
