Installing a New Garage Door

Like many things in life, garage doors also have a definite lifespan. After several years of perfect working condition, the exterior starts to deteriorate and the mechanism starts to go haywire every now and then. At first, it’s something that a call to your friendly technician will fix. However, as time goes by, you may find yourself needing to repair it more frequently. Soon, an exasperated garage door technician might suggest that you install a new garage door.

Contrary to what most people believe, installing a new garage door is not that expensive, especially if a lot of parts in your old garage door are still functioning perfectly. It’s not like they take down the entire garage door and throw it away; sometimes all you need is an upgrade, especially if your old garage doors worked on motors that have gone obsolete already. To save money, your technician might look through the different parts of your garage door, and save those that are still usable.

When installing a new garage door, you might want to step back and let a professional handle it. Garage doors are heavy and complicated, and it’s better to have a technician do it for you. However, if you are an expert at DIY projects, you can also install it on your own, but you would need assistance from another person because of the sheer weight of the doors. When removing the garage door, it has to be opened so that there is no tension on the springs. Use C-clamps to hold the door in place so that it doesn’t fall while you’re detaching the other parts. With the door secured, you can now remove the lift cables, springs and pulleys. With the help of a friend or a technician, lower the door so you can remove other parts like the hinges, rollers, tracks and fasteners from the wall.

Now take your new garage door and ensure that all the parts you’ll need are ready to prevent any hassles and problems later on. Now look at the wall where you will put your garage doors against. Make sure the wood isn’t rotting or soft. Remember to make all necessary repairs on the door jamb before you put in the new garage door.

When it comes to installing the different parts, start at the bottom. First lay down the weather stripping at the bottom panel and secure using galvanized nails. The corner brackets and hinges come next, before you move on to installing the rollers and tracks. You must then assemble the torsion springs and put in new track hangers. Make sure the screws on these are fastened securely.

Place the panels one by one; starting from the bottom going up until the entire opening is fully covered. Nudge each panel to ensure they’re level and fastened in place tightly. After all the panels are put in place, you can now install the spring, bearings and cables. Make sure all the parts are installed properly before removing the C-clamps.

Now you have your new garage door. To test it, simply open it halfway to check for the tension. All that’s left is to simply make adjustments so that it closes and opens at your preferred pace.
