Las Vegas is just 120 miles from the West Rim of the Grand Canyon, making it one of the best places from which to take a Grand Canyon helicopter landing tour.

Helicopters depart from various air terminals in the metropolitan area. The primary airstrips are ones located on the Las Vegas Strip and Boulder City. If you fly from the Strip, however, expect to pay more for the convenience.

The most popular landing tour is one that goes to the base of the canyon for a Champagne picnic. The deluxe version of this one bundles in a Colorado River boat ride and tickets to the Skywalk. There\’s also one that lands on the top and comes with glass bridge passes.

Of those three landing tours, I prefer the most deluxe one. It\’s a great value and lets you experience the top and the bottom. The only issue is availability because it sells out quickly. Much of this is due to its popularity. But the fact that helicopters only hold six people doesn\’t help the situation, either.

Too many travelers are under the impression that it\’s in their best interest to wait until they arrive in Las Vegas to book their flight. Don\’t do that. You\’ll most likely not get the flight you want or on a flight at all. To avoid this scenario, book at least a week in advance. During certain seasons it\’s a good idea to purchase seats two weeks in advance.

One reason I get from travelers who ask if it\’s better to purchase seats upon arrival in Las Vegas is that the tours will be cheaper. Just not true. In fact, the opposite. The truth of the matter is that the closer you get to your desired departure time, the prices goes up. It\’s always been this way and it will never change.

If for whatever reason the landing tour you want isn\’t available, you have options. The first is to go with an air-only tour. Like landing tours, these flights go over Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Colorado River and the West Rim but instead of descending they U-turn and go back to Las Vegas. These are actually your cheapest option and it\’s also one of the key reasons why aerial trips sell out often, too.

Then there are airplane tours. They follow the same routes as helicopters but do so at a higher altitude. Unlike helicopters, they don\’t land at the bottom of the canyon. They do, however, land at the top, and it\’s from there where you can take a helicopter tour to the bottom and a boat ride. There\’s also a great plane tour that includes Skywalk tickets.

Unlike helicopters, planes hold up to 19 adult passengers, which is one of the main reasons why you\’ll often find availability. These aircraft, too, are completely outfitted for sightseeing and feature oversized windows as well as wings that are attached to the top of the aircraft so everyone\’s views are unobstructed.
