In relatively cold countries, heat is an essential part of everyday life. Houses, offices, and buildings must have a source of heat to keep people warm during the cold days. In homes, electric baseboard heaters are a common essential. With a lot of choices for electric baseboard heaters on the market today, it might be confusing for homeowners on which of them will be more cost-effective yet efficient. There are two types of electric board heaters: Strip-heat and Liquid-filled heaters.

1.Heaters using strip-heat – this type of heater uses convection type air heating. It uses the heat energy derived from electricity to heat the cooler air around it and forces it to rise. It doesn\’t have a fan but uses natural ventilation making it less noisy when giving off warm air. Its heat is controlled by a thermostat that can either be directly on the heater or found mounted on a wall. It is relatively less expensive than other types of electric baseboard heaters but it is not the most efficient. Since it produces heat in short bursts, there won\’t be even heat distribution and the heat it produced won\’t be able to stay long inside the room. The warm air cools down fast as soon as the electric baseboard heater is turned off. It also makes a ticking sound as the electric baseboard heater turns on and off that can be annoying to some people.

2.Heaters using liquid-filled – this type of electric baseboard heater uses liquid like water or oil to produce heat. It heats the liquid usually located inside the heater which in turn heats up the air around it. With this type of heater, warm air can be maintained for longer periods after the heater is turned off. Therefore, it has less variation in temperature and is more comfortable. Because the electric baseboard heaters can be turned off for longer periods, it is more efficient in saving electricity cost.

Getting the type of electric baseboard heater that fits your need, is not a guarantee that it will be the most efficient. To be able to get the most out of the electric baseboard heaters, they should be installed properly and maintained regularly to produce optimum performance. Here are some tips when using your electric baseboard heaters:

1.Make sure that there is continuous airflow. Take out anything that might block the flow of air into the heaters such as thick carpets or furniture.

2.Regularly clean the coils. Like any equipment, it collects dirt and dust over time. This will lessen the heat-generating capacity of the electric baseboard heater adding more to the electricity consumption and decreasing its lifespan.

3.Do not keep unused rooms unheated. During extreme cold weather, the water pipes might freeze if it is turned off. It is best to just keep the temperature of these unused rooms turned down to prevent pipes from freezing and letting cold air from these rooms creep into other rooms.
