Content: Suwanee, GA – Any mention of “coach” and “workplace” in the same sentence use to conjure up a failing employee, a manager on a last-chance agreement, or a leader who is unable to lead. Today however there is a certain status in having a workplace coach, as it means you are serious about your career, or you are capable of managing your own destiny, or your employer sees you as a contender for advancement and is committed to laying the groundwork early. Today there are many different types of coaching relationships. Not too long ago however, the term “coach” quiet simply referred to the individual making the calls on any sports team. But over the last 10-15 years this phenomenon has changed. Behavior coach, business coach, career coach, corporate coach, leadership coach, life coach, self-awareness coach, speaking coach and workplace team coach are now all familiar workplace expressions.
Of all the things successful people do to accelerate their trip down the path to success, participating in some kind of coaching program is at the top of the list.
– Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Most people today either know a coach or know someone who is receiving coaching. The International Coach Federation published on May 23, 2014, the results of 2014 ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study, which provides insights into the minds and motivations of coaching consumers around the globe. Overall, 58% of respondents said they were aware of professional business and/or life coaching, including 17% saying they were “very aware” and 41% describing themselves as “somewhat aware.” Awareness levels varied strongly by age group, ranging from 67% among those aged 25-34 to 48% of those aged 55+. Among those who would consider coaching, the most frequently cited motivations were defining their own strengths and weaknesses (47%), followed by a desire to maximize their own potential (41%). The survey findings also reflect that male respondents tended to cite business-related reasons, such as optimizing work performance, whereas female respondents were more likely to mention personal development factors when they elected to seek coaching support.
