When visiting Las Vegas, it behooves the savvy traveler to consider experiencing the Grand Canyon. And the most economical way to do it? By bus, of course.

Las Vegas is just 120 miles from the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and only 277 miles from the South Rim. It takes 2.5 hours to reach the West and 5.5 hours to get to the South.

Now those drive times might sound high but the beauty of the Canyon makes the effort worthwhile. Besides, the trip is done via a luxury coach so you\’ll get there relaxed and in comfort.

Which Rim?

The rims are two very different places. The West is situated on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The South, by contrast, is in northern Arizona inside the forested Kaibab National Forest.

Temperatures at the West are similar to those in Las Vegas and regularly crack 100 degrees. At the South, you\’re going to be at an elevation of 7,000 feet, which means temperate summers and cold winters.

Considering the distinct climates, I recommend you dress accordingly. During summer, it\’s sensible to wear a hat, sunglasses, a long-sleeved shirt, shorts and closed-toe shoes. I also suggest you bring sun block, ChapStick and water.

Lots of travelers ask me, \”Which rim should I visit,\” and that\’s really based on what your objectives are. If you want thrills and excitement, then go to the West. If you are looking for natural scenic beauty, go to the South.

It\’s that simple but let me go into more detail.

At the West Rim, you can take a helicopter rider to the bottom and a boat ride on the Colorado River. You can also get tickets to do the Grand Canyon Skywalk. This is all unique to the West, especially those flights to the bottom, which are banned at the South.

At South Rim, you get up to 3 hours to explore, and that includes stops at Mather Point, Yaki Point and the historic Grand Canyon Village. There\’s plenty more and you\’ll have time for that, too. Just keep an eye on your watch as time flies.

West Rim and South Rim bus tours all include a hot buffet-style lunch and a Hoover Dam photo stop. Please note that the stop at the Dam is approximately 15 minutes and done primarily for pictures. If you want more time at the Dam, I suggest you do a separate day trip for it.

Bus tours are all-inclusive, so, in addition to lunch and Hoover Dam, your package will include all taxes and fees and professional driver guide service. When it comes to value, there\’s really no tour out there that comes close to a good coach package.

These excursions are very popular and that\’s why I recommend you book them in advance. Best practice is to get yours at least a week prior to the day you want to go to the Canyon. Anything less and you run the risk of not getting seats.

And always try to book your tour online. I say this because it\’s always cheaper on the Web – sometimes by up to 20 percent! The catch is this: To get that incredible Internet discount, you have to complete the transaction online. Failure to do so could result in getting hit with the retail rate, which is completely unnecessary if you this the right way.
