The weather is perfect for taking a Grand Canyon airplane tour from Las Vegas. And with so many great options from which to choose, you have to really be on your toes when you shop for the flights that best meet your needs.

The Rims

Most important to know is that Vegas flights go to the West Rim and the South Rim. The West Rim is a 30-minute flight and the South Rim is a 60-minute flight. Departures are daily this holiday season except for 12/25, which is Christmas Day.

Which Rim you should visit is dependent on the type of traveler you are. My recommendation is go to the West if you are looking for thrills and adventure and the South if you\’re into natural scenic beauty.

At West Rim, you can pick from air and landing tours. Air tours basically go over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam before flying over the National Park. Landing tours do that, too, before landing at the top of the rim at Grand Canyon West Airport.

Landing Tours

Personally, I\’m a big fan of landing tours. There are a number of them but the best come with helicopter rides to the bottom, boat rides on Colorado River and/or VIP tickets to the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

If you\’re not familiar with the Skywalk (it\’s also referred to as the Glass Bridge), it\’s a glass platform that lets you walk 70+ feet past the lip of the rim until you are suspended some 4,000 feet over the bottom.

Then there are the Vegas direct flights to South Rim. These are extremely popular because they get you there in under an hour. By contrast, it takes 5.5 hours by bus or car to reach this Rim. If you decide this is the trip for you, please try to book it in advance in order to get seats.

South Rim

There are two variations of this South Rim flight. One is the basic and it comes with a bus tour inside the Park. The other is the deluxe and it, too, comes with the bus tour as well as a 30-minute helicopter ride that goes from South Rim to North Rim and back.

Then there\’s the 50-minute airplane tour that takes off from Tusayan, AZ, at the South Rim itself. This is a great flight for travelers who are driving into the Park from such Arizona cities like Sedona, Flagstaff and Phoenix.

This flight starts by flying to the eastern boundary of the National Park before bearing north and going over and across the North Rim. Then it heads back to the airport via the Dragoon Corridor, the widest, deepest section of the Canyon.
