The Fun I Have With Computers
The fun I have with computers goes all the way back to 1981. As a plebe at West Point, we had to take a required computer course that taught us basic programming. It was Fortran based. For me, it was hard. The IF THEN concept did not do much for me. I was definitely interested in the computer and learning more but not at that time. During my programming days, I was trying to pass the course. Today, every college student had a computer. For us, there were four computers shared between 1400 students.
Since then, I did not touch a computer again until 1995. Bill Gates had the personal computer and Steve Jobs had the Mac at Apple. The dial up internet speed was 28.8 kbps. We thought that was fast. I was a retail distribution manager back then. I really wanted a computer to see if I could use it to start my own business. I did not know what that business would be. For Christmas of that year, Dad sent us a Mac. We were happy.
AOL was the email of choice. We used it to instant message to California from Colorado. We spent an hour on Saturday night instant messaging back and forth with our parents. It was how we connected. The only difference was we didn’t have to hold the phone to our ear. Those were the days. A few months later, I decided to start an internet advertising business. Build your own computers were hot then. So, I went to Gateway and built one.
I started the internet advertising premise with a mission of dedicated to your business with a satisfaction guarantee. Most of the business that was received was obtained via AOL classified ads. They were popular and people acted on them. I joined the local Chamber of Commerce to grow the business. It was a good experience. As computer popularity was growing, my fledgling business made it on the front page of the newspaper. I almost lost my other job because of that. That is another story. The paper peaked curiosity of local businesses though.
In 1997, we had our first born. That is when comedy and character came into my life. I also started to lose hair and get some gray. I blame that on our first born. Jonathan was the first baby I had ever held. Remember, I am almost 34 years old. Our computer turned into a childs play toy for the next year. I bought toys and software for a baby that would not be able to use them for three more years. He loved when Schroeder from “Charlie Brown” played the piano. We also had a Barney doll that communicated with the computer.
In 2000, we moved to Indiana. It was time for a new computer. Who was hot now? The hot computer company was Dell. So, I built my own Dell computer. Technology was constantly changing. It was great for learning new things. Sometimes it was too expensive to keep up with. In 1999, we had another son. Computers actually got more time as the kids, as small as they were, could hit the keys and the computer would respond.
The early days of the computer are a good reminder of a young, college student. They also bring back the memories of our kids being born. It really peaked my interest for computers. I still enjoy our combination of computers. Although, the kids outdo me in digital talents but I am still the SEO guy.
