How to Become Certified in HVAC Repair

In order to become certified in HVAC repair it is mandatory for you to have training from an accredited school that offers HVAC training. Once you become certified then you could apply for jobs at such places as HVAC repair San Diego. In order to get the training needed to become a certified Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning repair technician or mechanic you have three primary sources where you can get this training.

Technical or community colleges

This type of training can be divided into mechanic and technician. With the technician program, it is one to years of schooling and with the mechanical program, it involves three to four years of schooling. The main difference between these two fields is the depth of technical expertise you receive. To get into the HVAC training program admission is based on a combination of what high school courses you took, the admissions tests grades, and a personal interview. Many of these programs are now requiring applicants to complete both technical math and English exams as part of their admissions process. If you receive a low grade in either you may be required to complete bridging courses as part of admission to the HVAC training program.

Vendor specific training

Working on HVAC equipment is very complex so there are many venders who will offer HVAC training programs to certify HVAC technicians and mechanics in how to work on their specific brand and type of systems. These courses will generally last from one to three days. The training is normally arranged by the local HVAC trade association. This type of specialized training is very beneficial and many are offered for no cost. The reason that many vendors off this free training on their products is that they are trying to expand their market share in a certain area and it is a great way to increase the sales of the HVAC repair company that is offering the vendor’s products.

Apprenticeship programs

These types of program are arranged through a trade school or the local HVAC trade association. When in this program you will have to complete a specific number of hours while working in an HVAC business such as HVAC contractor San Diego. During this time, you will be working and training under the supervision of a master HVAC mechanic who is responsible for giving the apprentice a paid position along with on-the-job training. The apprentice will also have to take a specific number of required courses that must be completed throughout the apprentice program. This program will normally take five to seven years to complete but during that time, you will have a full-time paid job.

There is a high demand for HVAC mechanics so the competition to get into a HVAC apprenticeship program is very intense. When considering a HVAC apprenticeship program take the time to talk to the program administrators and other HVAC mechanics to learn more about the experiences and skills that are needed to be relevant to potential employers like HVAC repair San Diego.
