If you plan on visiting the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas this Valentine\’s Day holiday, make sure you go by plane. Flights get you there and back super fast and come with loads of great side trips from which to choose. But don\’t delay as these trips sell out quick.

From Las Vegas, you can reach the West Rim and the South Rim of the Canyon. The West Rim, which is 120 miles away, takes about 30 minutes to reach while the South Rim, which is 277 miles to the east, takes about 60 minutes. And both fly a similar flight path, going over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and the Colorado River.

West Rim

There are basic flights to the West Rim and these are your cheapest option. But frankly, I prefer the landing tours because you can add a trip to the bottom by helicopter, a boat ride down the Colorado River or a full access to the amazing Grand Canyon Skywalk, the all-glass bridge that lets you walk up to 70 feet over the edge.

Then there\’s the direct flight to the South Rim. This one\’s a crowd favorite because it gets you to the National Park in under an hour. This is significant because if you go by ground (bus or car) the drive takes up to 5.5 hours! Further, by flying, you\’ll see nearly the entire Canyon en route to Grand Canyon National Park Airport.

Airplane tours are a great option if you find helicopter tours too expensive. In fact, airplane tickets are usually up to $100 per person cheaper than helicopter rides. The reason for this price difference is that helicopters only hold 6 people and airplanes hold 19 people. Moreover, if a helicopter tour is sold out, there\’s a strong probability there are seats on the plane.

South Rim

Helicopters can only fly to the West Rim; the South Rim is out of their range. Airplanes can do both, and the one that goes to the South Rim can be upgraded to include a 2.5-hour bus tour inside the Park. If you really want to go for it, add a 30-minute, rim-to-rim helicopter ride to the mix. All in all, the Vegas-South Rim tour takes about 9 hours to complete (and is well worth it).

Airplanes are totally customized for sightseeing. Cabins are unusually large and spacious while windows are oversized so you can get a good, unobstructed view of the Canyon below. Each plane is equipped with plush seats and a trip narration that\’s translated in up to 10-plus languages, including Chinese, Korean, German, Italian and more.

As noted earlier, I do recommend you purchase your Valentine Las Vegas Grand Canyon airplane tour in advance. Valentine\’s tends to be very busy. Usually, you\’ll want to do this after you reserve your hotel room. Try to avoid booking 24 hours prior to take off. And definitely don\’t book the day of the tour because you\’ll pay a lot more and the tour itself will most likely be sold out.
