Las Vegas is a great place from which to visit the Grand Canyon by airplane. This is especially true during Spring Break as travelers look for fast and affordable ways to get to the National Park and back in time for dinner and a show.

Destinations

If you go for it, you\’ll have the option of visiting either the West Rim/Skywalk or the South Rim, which is located in Arizona near the small town of Tusayan, AZ, just west of Flagstaff.

The fact that you can fly from Vegas to the South Rim and be there in 60 minutes is quite unique. Further, helicopters are unable to make the trip because the South Rim is too far and out of their range. So if you want an air tour, planes are the only option.

Specifically, the Vegas-South Rim flight departs three times a day, twice in the morning and once in the early afternoon. As noted, flight time to the Rim is 60-minutes. Total tour time is 9.5 hours, and that includes hotel pick up and drop off as well as a 2.5-hour bus tour inside the Park.

Options

For those folks who want to really take this tour up a notch, add a helicopter ride to the mix. Here you can do a 30-minute rim-to-rim flight that takes you through the Dragoon Corridor, the widest and deepest section of the Canyon.

If you are looking to stay closer to Vegas, there are numerous flights that go to the West Rim and the Grand Canyon Skywalk. There are two kinds: an air-only tour and a series of great landing tours that come with additional side trips.

Both kinds follow the same flight path, going over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam and the Colorado River before entering Grand Canyon airspace. The air-only tour will turn back and head to Vegas, while the landing tour will descend to the West Rim airport.

West Rim

On the ground, you can explore the top of the Rim for 2.5-hours. I suggest you make the most of it and go from Eagle Point to Guano Point by shuttle (free). There\’s a tour that includes a ticket to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, but if you\’ve got a tour that doesn\’t include it, you can buy one upon arrival (more expensive).

The landing tour that I recommend is the one that comes with a helicopter ride to the bottom of the Canyon. It\’s a 4,000-foot descent and it\’s an incredible ride. Plus you land at a landing pad next to the Colorado River. You\’ll have about 30-minutes to explore. Lastly, you can add a boat ride down the Colorado to this adventure.

Vegas airplane tours to the Canyon are very popular, especially during Spring Break. As such, I recommend you book your tour in advance and online. Avoid booking 24-hours in advance or same-day as you\’ll end up paying more or you won\’t get a seat. And by all means book online – that\’s where all the deals are.
