Las Vegas Grand Canyon Spring Break Helicopter Tours
Las Vegas is one of the best places to spend Spring Break (March – April). Of course, there\’s plenty to see and do, with one of the best things being a helicopter ride to the top or the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
West Rim
Vegas helicopters all go to the West Rim, which is 125 miles east of town. They don\’t fly to the South Rim or the North Rim because those destinations are too far away. If you want either of those, I recommend you take a direct-flight airplane tour.
There are two kinds of Vegas helicopter rides: All air or landing. The former basically goes over key parts of the Canyon before turning back to The Strip. The later lands at the West Rim airstrip or goes below the rim and lands at the base alongside the Colorado River.
The most popular landing tour is the one that goes to the bottom for a Champagne picnic. Many travelers opt to upgrade this package to include a boat ride down the River. The other popular tour is the one that lands on top and comes with all-access Grand Canyon Skywalk tickets.
Skywalk
The Skywalk, by the way, is the all-glass platform bridge that let\’s you walk about 70 feet over the edge until you are standing an amazing 4,000 feet over the bottom. The views from the Skywalk are tremendous, especially the one overlooking Eagle Point.
Vegas helis come in basic and deluxe packages. The basic tours use the older, more standard helicopters. Deluxe tours use the newer, more modern EcoStar 130, which is equipped with a massive 180-degree wraparound windshield. Its cabin is also 25 percent larger so you also get stadium-style bucket seats from which to enjoy the tour.
Another great thing about deluxe tours is that they take off from the Vegas Strip as opposed to Boulder City, which requires a 40-minute shuttle ride from town. Further, transportation is done via limousine, whereas the trip to boulder is via a Sprinter van. Finally, the deluxe tour includes an extended tour over the LV Strip.
RSVP
I do recommend that you purchase Vegas helis in advance. I usually advise getting them right after you book your hotel room. If that\’s not possible, try for two weeks ahead of time. And definitely avoid booking with 24 hours or same day as the price goes up and availability goes down.
Further, always book you tour over the Internet. Online prices are cheaper than offline/phone prices by a lot. Just make sure you complete your transaction in order to qualify for the Internet discount. Failure to do that could result in you paying the full retail price!
Spring weather runs cold and hot. It will definitely still be chilly during March with temperatures climbing upwards in April. That said, pack a medium-weight jacket, a scarf and gloves and wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and close-toed shoes like running shoes or boots (especially if you are doing a landing tour or visiting the South Rim, which sits at 7,000 ft. In elevation).
Conclusion
I hope this article about Las Vegas Spring Break Helicopter tours to the Grand Canyon proved helpful as you plan your trip. I personally favor the landing tours, especially the one that goes to the bottom because it\’s only available from Vegas. And make sure you purchase your seats in advance and online. That way you\’ll get the best price on the most popular flight times.
