The Memorial Day holiday is quickly coming up and if you find yourself anywhere near the Grand Canyon (e. G. Las Vegas or South Rim), make sure you take an airplane tour. Please note that this holiday is super popular and that plane flights will sell out the closer we get to that date.

The Rims

There are two places from which to take a Grand Canyon airplane tour: Las Vegas and the South Rim, which is located in Arizona near the small town of Tusayan. Vegas flights go to the West Rim and the South Rim while South Rim flights go over just that area.

If you fly from Vegas, you can pick from air-only and landing tours, both of which follow the same flight path to the Canyon over Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, the Colorado River and the Canyon itself. Air-only will turn back after going over the Canyon while landing tours will either stop on top of the West or South Rim.

The majority of Vegas tours go to the West Rim, and it\’s the landing tours that I prefer the most because they offer a better value and a better experience. Skywalk

The other great West Rim air tour is the one that comes with a ticket to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Known as the Glass Bridge, the Skywalk is a platform that let\’s you walk an astonishing 70 feet over the edge until you are standing about 4,000 feet over the bottom!

If you want to fly to the South Rim from Vegas, you\’re in luck. There\’s a direct flight to this rim and it only takes 60 minutes to get there. That\’s remarkable because it takes a bus or a car more than 5.5 hours on the ground to make this trip. This particular flight also lets you upgrade it to include an amazing 30-minute helicopter ride.

The South Rim\’s sole airplane tour is a great one. It\’s a 50-minute ride and it goes over nearly 70 percent of the entire National Park. That includes flying over the South Rim, East Rim and North Rim as well as the Dragoon Corridor, which is the widest, deepest section of the National Park.

Memorial Day will be warm or hot and it definitely won\’t be cool. As such, I recommend you bring water and a salty snack if you are doing a landing tour. I also recommend you wear shorts, a long-sleeved shirt and a brimmed hat. Again, if you are doing a landing tour, bring sun block and wear sunglasses because it will be bright outdoors.
