Divorce seems to be all too common; it’s likely you know many couples that have got divorced, indeed you unfortunately be one of them. It’s still a sad fact that nearly 50 percent of marriages end in divorce.

Divorce figures going back to 2009 state that there are 3.4 divorces for every 1,000 of population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It’s often mentioned that the divorce rate keeps increasing, but statistically this is not the case for the U.S. as a whole. Take 1990, the divorce rate was 4.7 per 1000 which fell to 4.2 per 1,000 by the year 2000. By 2005 it had fallen to 3.6 per 1,000.

In terms of state figures Nevada leads the way in the number of divorces. This is understandably, due to its relaxed marriage and divorce laws; Nevada had the highest recorded divorce rate in 2009 at 6.6 per 1,000 of population. Massachusetts recorded the lowest divorce rate at 1.8 per 1,000 of population. It would be interesting to ascertain the reason for such a low figure.

Virginia has historically mirrored the overall U.S. divorce rate, but from 2004 the divorce rate was higher than the total U.S. divorce rate. In 2009, the last recorded the figure; it was 3.7 per 1,000 compared to the U.S. average of 3.4 per 1,000.

However, there is a growing trend amongst those who have divorced to choose to do it amicably. Gone are the days of long drawn out and expensive divorces that often ruined people’s lives both financially and mentally; although obviously there are still unfortunately plenty that do become acrimonious.

Figures suggest that about 95 percent of all U.S. divorces are uncontested; that is so say both parties agree on the way everything should be settled. Getting divorced is a bad enough experience without the added hassle of arguments between the parties that often involve friends and family members.

An uncontested divorce can be simple and straightforward; all it needs is for the two parties to meet up and agree on everything before filing for divorce. It can be completed in a matter of days or weeks, if the parties have put in the effort. One additional main benefit is that it is the least expensive method for getting divorced.

Divorce isn’t something most people tend to do more than once, so it’s likely that they don’t have any knowledge about divorce proceedings. It very easy for each party to rush off and find their own law firm and if they are not careful a battle can begin. It’s not that the law firms want a battle, it’s because the law firms job, once appointed is to look after the interest so their client. This of course involves going through everything and pointing out what each party’s rights are and can result in misunderstandings between the parties, despite having previously agreed everything.

Two law firms are not required for an uncontested divorce. Providing people work together and are completely open the matter, it can be settled quickly.
