If possible put a small shovel and a sealed container filled with a mixture of sand and salt in the car before you set off. Laying this mixture under your tyres can give you some traction if you get stuck in the snow.

Then there are the fundamentals: an old blanket, coat or sleeping bag is always handy in case of a winter breakdown. It’s also worth keeping a first aid kit, a mobile phone, a car adaptable phone charger, some fresh drinking water and a tasty, sustaining snack in case of emergencies.

If your car suffers in the snow and is no longer roadworthy, as part of your claim most reputable car insurance companies can arrange to get you and your passengers home or to your planned destination. If the adverse weather conditions make it impossible to complete your journey and you have to make a claim some car insurers will pay as much as £100 per person for overnight accommodation.
