How to Eat a More Healthy Diet
There is no question that fruits and vegetables are the base of a healthy diet. If you choose to incorporate more of them into your cooking, there is no question that you can more easily lose weight and reduce your tendency to develop heart problems as you get older.
You should try to prepare meals with more fruits and vegetables because they are very low in calories and full of nutrients. Most of the fruits and vegetables that you can buy at the grocery store are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that keep you healthy.
When you are shopping, always try to shop on the edges of the store. Most grocery stores are laid out so that the produce, meat and dairy sections are on the outside edges of the space. You should avoid the processed food aisles as much as you can.
Also, you should try to buy fruits and vegetables of many different colors. Remember that fruits and veggies that have a lot of color will usually have more minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. You should try to make sure that you get five servings each day. Make sure that your meals that you prepare for your family also have five servings of fruits and vegetables. Some of the really good types of fruits and vegetables that you can include in your diet to make you healthier are broccoli, carrots, melons of all kinds and citrus fruits. These all are full of antioxidants and will help to prevent serious diseases.
When you eat more fruits and vegetables, you will get more of the carbs that are good for you. You will also get about 30 grams of fiber that your body needs every day. What many people do not know is that this will slow down how quickly your body absorbs carbohydrates, which can help you to lose weight.
Another good idea to eat healthier and to lose weight is to avoid many processed foods and simple carbohydrates. You should not eat too many foods with sugar in them, or products with a lot of refined grains. These include crackers, chips and white bread. Also, be sure that you never drink regular soda. One of these drinks has 175 calories and several teaspoons of sugar. These are empty calories that go right to your waistline.
Finding good substitutes for unhealthy options is also of paramount importance. For example, rather than using mayonnaise on your sandwiches, you should think about using mustard. This will give you a lot of flavor with less fat and fewer calories. Of course, you should use wheat or whole grain bread, not white. You should pay close attention to the bread label and be sure that the bread really does have wheat or whole grain ingredients.
Also, you should take a look at the snack options that you have around the house. This is one of the easiest ways to add a lot of empty calories in your diet. If you have a lot of chips and crackers and cookies lying around, you are going to eat a lot of extra calories that do not fill you up. You should have healthier snack options around. Instead of packages of junk food, you should stock your house with fruit, carrots, nuts, granola bars and yogurts. You really can cut down on the number of calories you consume in a day if you snack smarter and healthier.
Also, a good deal of eating healthier is an act of retraining your mind. The sweetness of an orange is not in the same league as the sweetness of a candy bar. However, you can retrain your taste buds to find the more healthy sweetness of fruit to be more desirable than candy.
