Why Own Your Own Business
These days there is so much bad news floating around about people being laid off, businesses going bust and people living from hand to mouth. The reality is that unless you own your own business, you will never be fully in control of your life. The old economy where we used to rely on others to provide job security for us is quickly slipping away. Even the things we used to rely on to take care of us in our old age like our 401ks and pensions have been greatly compromised. Last week I met a lady who is her late 70’s who is actually running a thriving online business. I was totally impressed. She has such vitality and such control of her life, and she does not need to depend on anyone else’s good will to take care of her. That is such a good place to be.
I left my job 2 years ago. I was a fairly successful banker and even won many awards for my bank. But it dawned on me that the success I had was actually not mine, but my employer’s. All the benefits of my success accrued to my employers and not me. It also dawned on me that for me to become financially successful I would need to own my own business. As long as I continued to work for someone else, my life was not within my control. They paid me what they believed I was worth and they could fire me at any time. I was not in control.
I realised that it’s important to own your own business for the following reasons:
– You control your own destiny
– You decide how much you want to be paid
– The harder and smarter you work, the more you make as opposed to being limited to a fixed salary
– You decide when you want to work and the hours you put into it.
– You get to spend more time with your family
– You are become an elite class of people that have decided to take control of their lives and possibly earn substantial levels of income which very few jobs will provide
There are many other advantages to starting your own business. But the reality is starting a business is not for everyone. Taking personal responsibility for your own destiny can be overwhelming and sometimes it’s easier to simply remain where you are. If that’s you then that is great. But if you want to take control of your life, then the next thing is to identify the business that is best for you.
Not every business is for everyone. The dangerous path to follow is to simply do what everyone else is doing. The main criter1a is that it should be in a sector or area that you enjoy and not endure. Owning your own business should not be a dreaded chore that you need to do. Take the time to enjoy the journey.
