Essential Autumn Accessories
Autumn is possibly the hardest time of the year for the fashion-conscious. Okay, so it’s an exciting time on the catwalks with all the best designers revealing their latest Autumn/Winter collections but in a practical sense, Autumn poses a real conundrum. Autumn represents a kind of fashion limbo where you’ll be too cold in your summer clothes but far too hot in winter attire.
Thankfully, this is something fashion designers, both at the high end of the market and on the high street, have taken into account and the result is transitional fashion; clothing designed for the cold mornings and warm afternoons that characterise autumn. Within this trend, there are some accessories that should be considered essential in autumn.
Although the early autumn months tend to be warmer than the later months, generally temperatures stay around the same low double-figure/high single figure so you don’t need to buy two different wardrobes. Instead, buy smartly.
A scarf should be considered an essential autumn accessory, but the bulky scarves we associate with winter will leave you feeling far too warm. Instead, opt for a lightweight scarf that’ll keep the breeze from your neck without leaving you dripping with sweat! A wrap-style scarf made from lightweight material or a skinny scarf made from slightly heavier material make for perfect options.
You’ll also need some gloves, but again avoid heavy woolly gloves. Leather gloves provide a stylish alternative, while fingerless gloves should also be considered an option – if you feel that you can pull them off! However, the ultimate in transitional glove fashion has to be fingerless glove/mitten hybrids, which can be altered depending on the weather.
A good hat can add the perfect finishing flourish to any outfit, but picking the right one can be difficult. As you’ll no doubt be wearing a lightweight coat and possibly a scarf and gloves, it’s probably best to avoid summer staples such as caps and straw hats. In their place, try wearing a light beanie or a light Ushanka. Faux-fur headbands are also a great option and are bang on trend at the moment; they’ll provide warmth whilst also allowing the top of your head to breath!
There are no real right and wrong options when it comes to shoes in autumn, but it goes without saying that shoes that reveal a lot of the foot such as sandals may not be best suited for the occasional autumn shower. On the other end of the spectrum, something like sheepskin boots will leave your feet far too warm.
Luckily, autumn provides the perfect conditions to break out the boots and brogues. There are so many stylish boots available for reasonable prices online and on the high street, so you should find yourself spoiled for choice. Try not to opt for anything too outlandish, however; no leopard-skin for example! Black and brown are the best bet, while the style of the boot is entirely up to you. Chelsea boots and low heeled boots, however, are particularly in fashion at the moment.
Oh, and before we forget, don’t forget the most autumn accessory of all; an umbrella for all those unexpected autumn showers!
