Fibro-Fog: Who Else Lives With a Cloudy Brain? Asks a Concord Fitness Professional

Mainstream medicine has made great strides by acknowledging fibromyalgia syndrome as a real medical condition, instead of insisting total-body pain was \”all in your head\”, say may Concord fitness professionals. Without realizing it, they were correct about one aspect of fibromyalgia syndrome. Fibro-fog or brain-fog is commonly experienced by people with fibromyalgia.

It\’s not only scary it\’s embarrassing to lose cognitive functioning for the first time. Imagine being in mid-sentence, when your brain shuts down. You can\’t remember what you were about to say or recall the subject matter. No matter how hard you try to grasp the thought, it\’s beyond the periphery of your brain.

Such short-term loss of memory has partially been attributed to chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia. It\’s been scientifically proven as similar to the neuroendocrine dysfunction that the healthy, aging population contracts.

According to many Concord fitness professionals, signs of fibro-fog include: deficiency in vocabulary, frequent forgetfulness, feeling \”muddle headed\”, storing objects where they don\’t belong (i.e. car keys in refrigerator), impaired sense of direction (traveling the same route to work when suddenly surroundings aren\’t familiar) and inability to focus or concentrate.

Be mindful, fibro-fog is not: early onset Alzheimer\’s disease, dementia or any of the various brain-deteriorating conditions. As we are all unique individuals, no two people experience brain-fog in precisely the same way, say many Concord fitness experts.

Sleep deprivation, another common denominator of fibromyalgia, is believed to play a starring role in fibro-fog. People with cloudy brain generally do not experience \”restorative\” sleep. They frequently awaken due to pain, light, loud noise or discomfort. Healthy people, on the other hand, enter the \”delta wave\” during sleep, where the mind busily assimilates information and integrates it in the brain. Without this vital phase of the sleep cycle, the part of the brain that recalls information operates under compromised conditions.

During episodes of brain-fog, people have reported a vast array of uncontrollable emotion-related reactions, such as: extreme anger, outburst of tears, irritability, frustration, impatience, abrupt depression, moodiness, unfounded fear and/or sadness.

This takes a toll on friends and family, who do not understand the startling change in personality, due to the person\’s brain \”misfiring\”. As a result, the person is constantly in a defensive posture, apologizing for their confused, overwhelmed brain.

If you or someone dear to you, shows signs and symptoms of fibro-fog, it\’s important to understand the first step to maintaining some semblance of sanity is recognition.

Good communication with others will somewhat help them understand that it\’s the fibromyalgia and not you. Try not to put unrealistic expectations upon them, because it is impossible for anyone without fibromyalgia syndrome to fully compute its devastating consequences.

There are things to do, say some Concord fitness experts. You can\’t change or cure fibro-fog. You can learn to compensate. Primarily, loss of clarity is endangering your life, make alternate arrangements. For instance, it\’s not uncommon to drive through red lights, because you couldn\’t see them through the fog.

Make lists. Make a lot of lists. Keep a list of important telephone numbers near the telephone. Keep a daily list or calendar with things-to-do and appointments-to-keep. Keep a task list at work. When learning new tasks, keep a detailed list of steps you\’ll need to take the next time. Take a list of questions when you have a doctor appointment.

Work with your circadian clock. If you wake-up tired, postpone tasks that require concentration, such as working with figures; vice-versa if morning is your best time.

No multi-tasking. Don\’t try to do several things at one time. This only sparks confusion.

Exercise daily. Experts believe exercise can aid in lifting the fog. Do what you can, when you can, but don\’t try to \”push\” through the pain.

At present, mainstream medicine remains stymied about potential cures for fibro-fog
