What to Look For in a Drum Set

Brand Name- some brands have quality guaranteed. A less know brand, Sonor, rises to the top, at any level, beginner to stage. They have been behind other brands as they used a slot pattern for the tops of the tension rods, so you had to have their style of drum key.

Lately they have been renowned world-wide for their high end snare drums. Many sizes and different materials for the shells. They include piccolo snares and deep shells for a variety to match the professionals ear. That said, uniquely to Sonor they have many options for every level of player. Birch, and maple, are the hands down

Favorites.

How about Yamaha? They may beat the quality and ingenuity of Sonor. Yamaha

Uses a patented technique to make their shells and the hardware comes from their motorcycle hardware factory.

At the entry level one can get a durable and otherwise quality set, but the sound from a beginners set is hands down lower in quality then that of a Pro Birch or Maple set. These sets that use a better grade wood and shell manufacturing techniques.

The hardware, bass drum pedal and cymbals are a more personal choice. Do you like heavy duty stands, even though they are bulky and heavy? Can you get used to a new type of pedal and do the cymbals sound like the one\’s you like. Take time trying different drum thrones, to see the one you like best. Pay attention to how high and how low the throne adjusts, and stay away from a clamp style that puts pressure on the height adjustment rod. These will become obsolete and/or become unadjustable.

Hardware that is double braced and has a quality chrome finish, is great for a drummer playing before a large audience. Single braced is great for a small venue and some genres of music. Stay away from the latches used on both cheap to expensive stands. They seem to never work as they should and can become frustrating. Hardware includes tom mounts, bass drum pedal, and hi hat stand.

Cymbals are fragile on the least expensive sets. Look for a quality cast cymbal.

One well known cymbal manufacture is Wuhan. They have an appropriate size and sound that borders at the pro level but are priced at the entry level cymbals prices.
