1. If you decide to use a web designer, it’s a good idea to thoroughly investigate his or her background. The reason is this: Building a website is a very costly undertaking and can be a bit frustrating. The last thing you want is to commit to someone who is not a good match in terms their work ethic, their interest or their level of expertise. Contact their references, and have a few questions prepared to ask the person that you call. Ask their former customers questions like: (a) Was the designer helpful when they had questions; (b) Did the developer meet deadlines; and (c) Did the designer comply with the terms of their contract?

2. If you hire someone, check out their work. Check out their portfolio. Is the quality and approach of their work keeping up with the design trends of today? Look at work they’ve completed for other customers with businesses similar to yours. Do you like their style? Some designers have a signature style may not jive well with the nature of your business. Is it a good fit?

3. Read a manual or two on web-building. After familiarizing yourself with the lingo and basics of web-building, draft up a list of questions so you can adequately interview some web design candidates and are able to ask the right questions. Don’t go in blind. Ignorance can cost you!

4. If you are a do-it-yourself type of gal or guy, arm yourself with some essential knowledge so that you can create an effective website. There are a host of ideas you can implement to increase the likelihood of driving decent traffic to your site . . . on your own and without the help of a web developer or designer. There are also many features that should not be applied.

5. There are loads of free resources out there for images, video, music, fonts, html, file storage and lots more. Scour the Internet so you can get your hands on the plethora of websites and blogs to make your web-building experience productive. Before signing up for any programs, check out their competitors to see if the offer better options.

Whether you do it yourself or hire a web geek, get some fundamental understanding of what the process of building a website entails and what you need in order to create a successful website. Know what needs to be done to attract customers and keep them on your site. There is no point in having a website if no one is going to see it or if whoever stops by to perhaps purchase your services leaves because something on your site is just not “working for them.”
