Seals need our help to survive and to flourish. It is getting harder and harder for seals to survive in the wild. Food sources are disappearing because of climate changes and pollution. Overfishing has depleted the fish populations making it a constant tug of war with fishermen and seals. Some countries even allow culling of seals. This is hunting down defenseless seals for sport and for their coats. They are killed in inhumane ways and hundreds of thousands perish by culling. Something needs to be done to protect these regal and fun loving creatures.

What You Can Do About Culling

Although there is no culling of seals in the UK, there are a few countries that do allow it at large scales. Become aware of the countries that are allowing this to happen. Canada is just one of them. Over 300,000 seals are going to die this year due to culling. Most of the seals that are killed are only a few months old. As soon as their white coat disappears they are considered fair game to hunters. Since seal products are allowed in much of Europe, it is important to be sure you aren’t buying any of them. Everyone must stop buying seal products. Hunters will not have a reason to hunt seals if they can’t sell products. Talk to your government to have seal products banned from the UK and other European countries.

Illegal Kills in the UK

Unfortunately many fishermen are killing seals that venture to close to their fish farms. They claim they are protecting their livelihood although nets could be used that are made to prevent seals from entering the fishery enclosures. There is nothing in place that will make the fisheries install the anti-predator nets at this time. These nets could become mandatory and seals would stand a better chance of survival. Other fishermen are also killing seals who are hunting in the areas they do their fishing at. They want everyone to believe that seals are causing the demise of fish populations. In reality fishermen and pollution are the cause for a shortage of fish. Seals take about 2% of the fish every year. Fishermen are responsible for about 25%. Who really is to blame?

The Conservation of Seals Act

There is an Act in place that is supposed to protect seals in the UK. The Conservation of Seals Act was set up in 1970 but because of all the loopholes, fishermen are still killing seals and getting away with it. The only time the Act was enforced was when there was a deadly disease spreading among the seal populations. Then all killing was effectively stopped. If it was done in 1983 because of disease, it can be done again because of diminishing species of seals. Sign petitions and send them to your government. Send them to Canada about culling. You have a voice that can be heard. Even seal sanctuaries are helping and can give you a way to help save seals for future generations to come.
