Commentary By Jamie McIntyre

Gina Rinehart’s comments have certainly caused a stir.

However those who criticise her comments by blatantly taking them out of context still fail to provide a valid argument against her statement.

“Those that envy the wealthy or whinge about not having enough money should perhaps work harder and spend less time drinking and socialising”.

In the right context, her comments are valid.

She was referring to those whinging Australians, not all Australians of course.

Also her comment regarding Australia needing a lower minimum wage is nothing more than a statement of fact.

Of course it wouldn’t be a popular comment, but someone has to speak the truth.

Australia labour rates are simply too high.

Whether it’s a billionaire saying it or not doesn’t change the fact of what she is saying.

Of course the current socialist government and Unions will criticise her perspective as they are largely to blame for Australia’s high labour costs and low productivity.

Australians have to either:

Increase their productivity, and yes that may mean working harder in some cases-I’d suggest by working smarter. Let’s face it, in most countries people work harder than the average Australian except the few socialist type European countries that don’t are the ones going broke. So her comments in this context are accurate. Follow treasurer Swan’s advice and we will end up like Greece and Spain with basket case economies.

Or accept lower wages. Now Gina isn’t trying to sell voters to vote for her -so she can harshly state the truth whether people like it or not. Whereas the politicians and unionist criticising her are the ones selling a false promise they can’t deliver to Australians and therefore criticise the truth.

Of course she is an easy prey for the critics as she is wealthy. Moreover people wrongly claim that she did inherit her wealth. In fact she inherited a debt laden mining company with largely undeveloped mining leases. Rinehart turned it into a $20-30 billion empire which has contributed massively to this country. Her contributions are a lot more than any of the critics have ever done or ever will- such as treasurer Swan and she deserves significant credit. Mr Swan would however like to take the credit for Australia’s economic success.

Or course inheriting her dads company helped. But I doubt the Australians that envy the wealthy or whinge about the lack of money in their life would have done a fraction of what she has achieved if they started in her position. So, the criticisms are invalid and clearly misguided.

She’s made it from hard work, determination and a can do attitude. It’s irrelevant whether we like or agree with all her comments or not.

Take the politicking out of it and the envy and jealousy of her critics who prefer to take wealth belonging to others (via welfare and subsidise government wages) than work a bit harder and drink and smoke a bit less. People should read her comments in context because she has highlighted some harsh truths Australians should listen to.

People may find out the reality of her comments the hard way by living a life of whinging about being broke while drinking and smoking too much in the pub.

Life is a choice.

And no one has a monopoly on being a millionaire or on doing well in this country.

Those who want to be wealthier should indeed consider Gina’s advice. Those who want to be helpless victims should perhaps follow our Treasurer’s advice.

I am not sure I’d envy his achievements in life. Nor am I saying that we should all be like Gina either. She could do with some work life balance.

However for those who envy the wealthy or whinge about their life should perhaps listen to her comments in context and have a go.

Those who don’t whinge or envy the wealthy simply have no reason to be offended by her comments despite the mainstream media trying to take it out of context. These biased comments are a sad reflection on many Australians who have had it too easy for too long and need to contribute more.

Australia needs more people willing to tell it how it is whether people like the harsh reality or not and less people selling false promises for votes with the sole aim in life to take money from those who actually produce the wealth in this country.
