Choosing Wall Tile Colours
When choosing your wall tiles, colour is an important factor that will help create the mood and atmosphere in the room, plus it shows your personality. Kitchen tiles and bathroom tiles can help you to create the ambience you want. Don\’t be afraid to show your true colours! Different colours can determine whether your room is fresh and airy, energising, peaceful or even mysterious and dramatic. Always remember that you can add an accent or a hint of colour as well to complete the look you desire.
The Colour Wheel
When choosing your room scheme, the colour wheel uses science to select colours that match. Primary colours cannot be made from any other colour, but secondary and tertiary colours are a mixture of primary colours. Look up the colour wheel and consider the following options, which can be applied to your entire room scheme.
Tonal scheme: Choose one colour and use different shades or tints of this colour.
Harmonious scheme: Colours next to each other are harmonious.
Contrast scheme: Colours opposite each will add a contrast, good for making a statement.
Ways to use colour in your room:
– Consider all the furniture, work surfaces, walls, floor and main contents and then choose a scheme from above. Bring in a sample of your work top to see which tiles match. Think about which colour scheme will look best in the room you are tiling and follow the rules of the colour wheel so that your colours match.
– Would you prefer your tiles to be warm colours (reds), cool colours (blues) or neutral colours (white, beige)?
– Add additional colour to your scheme with a feature wall, border tiles, decorative tiles, a mosaic zone or vertical strip. This also adds texture, character and individuality to your room and overall tile design. Don’t worry about the technical side – Tileflair staff will help out with the planning side.
– Take a tile sample home with you to make sure the colour suits the room in different light. This will help you to be certain about what will look beautiful.
– A smaller room may appear cramped if you paint or tile with dark colours, whereas a large room may benefit from multiple, rich shades. Likewise, a dimly lit room requires a lighter colour scheme, whereas a space with ample natural lighting may seem too spacious if it is painted or tiled in light colours.
– Natural Stone or realistic Natural Stone effect tiles can add texture and colour variety to your walls or floors, also adding you’re your room scheme.
This brief guide will help steer you in the right direction for choosing the right colour tile…. It\’s a big decision!
RED TILES – can be exciting, dangerous, passionate, associated with love, adventure and heat. Too hot some people, stimulating for others!
BLUE TILES – fresh, airy and cool, associated with summer skies and happiness. There are many shades of blue ranging from bright and energetic to paler shades with tranquil and calming qualities.
PURPLE TILES – depending on the tone, purple can be moody and gothic or the lighter shades closer to lilac can be feminine and sophisticated. Purple evokes creativity, magic and wealth.
STONE EFFECT GREY & BEIGE TILES – neutral and complimentary tones add an air of calm and relaxing feelings with inspiration from the natural world. Texture may also be added through the finish of the tile and additional accents of colour (such as in border tiles) will celebrate the majesty of neutral tones and shades.
GREEN TILES – depending on the shade, bright greens are invigorating and associated with freshness and new life, whilst paler greens can be relaxing and peaceful. Green dominates the natural world and breathes new life into your room with an uplifting sensation.
BROWN TILES – a very grounded and stable colour associated with security, dependability and feelings of trust. Comfortable and cosy browns help relax the body but too much brown can be drab and depressing! Be sure to strike a good balance with other complimentary colours such as blue, gold or orange.
Once you have decided which colour tiles to choose, you should now consider which finish would look best – but not just look good but actively improve your surroundings. A glossy finish will reflect the light and create the illusion of the room looking bigger, glossy tiles also make a room look clean and modern. Matt finishes absorb light, so look more natural and will not show reflections from light sources. Satin finishes are an in-between finish and can look modern and elegant.
