It\’s holiday season and now more than ever is a great time to take a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon.

Lots of folks think the National Park is impenetrable during winter. Indeed, snow is always a possibility, but it adds a dimension to the canyon to which no other season can compare.

Opportunities to see this majestic landmark pasted with the white stuff is more likely at the South Rim, which sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet plus.

Referred to as the \”official\” Grand Canyon, the South Rim is located in central Arizona just west of Flagstaff. If you are visiting Sedona, Phoenix or Scottsdale, this is the rim for you.

Las Vegas travelers also frequent this rim on a regular basis. Popular ways to get there include bus and airplane. In this case, I prefer airplane as it\’s just a 1-hour flight versus a 5.5-hour bus ride.

South Rim helicopter rides come in two flavors: Thirty minutes and 50 minutes. The shorter trip is a great way to sample the National Park as it goes from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. The longer tour, which I recommend, covers the South, East and North Rims.

I\’m hearing of a hot new air-ground tour that combines the 30-minute flight with a Jeep tour at sunset. On the ground, you get to check out one of the park\’s hidden, elevated fire towers before winding up at Hopi Point at dusk.

The West Rim, which is just east of Las Vegas, hosts a lot of helicopter trips. Please note that flights to this rim originate exclusively from Las Vegas, and that there are no direct flights between the two rims.

Pick from aerial and ground packages, both of which fly over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. The air-only trip is great for folks either on a budget or don\’t have a ton of time to do the canyon.

However, if you do have time and budget, I strongly recommend a landing package as that will give you a real feel for what the Grand Canyon is all about. The most popular trip is one that flies to the bottom for a picnic. Boat trips and Skywalk passes are also available.

Flights are limited during the holiday season. Knowing this, I advise all readers to book ahead of time. You\’re chance of getting the seats and the flight you want increases dramatically if you reserve your trip at least four days prior to your desired departure date.

Finally, dress according to the weather. Like I said, the South Rim does get snow, so wear a good jacket, gloves, hat, solid footwear and long pants. The West Rim isn\’t as cold as the South but you still need to bundle up. For both destinations, you\’ll need to bring water, sunglasses and lip balm.

Indeed, the holiday season is upon us. If you find yourself in central Arizona or Las Vegas this time of the year, definitely consider a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. It\’s definitely and adventure you\’ll cherish for a lifetime.
