Fighting Off Self Esteem Problems After Losing A Job

When a boss tells you that you are no longer needed at your job and they let you go, things can seem very bad. Depression, anxiety, and feeling like you’re a failure can all be coupled into a solitary emotion that can hang on you with such gravity that you will soon see the asphalt. Losing a job can really be rough on self-esteem and the common emotional response is depression and anger. If you have ever felt the sting of losing a job, especially one that you depend on because you’re supporting a family, than you know how it feels to be in the dumps. To fight off the doldrums you will need to learn how to rise above the feelings and get back into the groove. Consider a few ideas that will lighten the blow and get back into the work force.

You are an Expert – The first thing that you need to consider is the fact that you’re an expert at something. Whether you went to college for your career or you have been in a job for a short amount of time, you are an expert at something that always means that there is someone else out there that is not as good as you. That is not meant to say others are not good, but rather to inspire you to remember that you are valuable in the work force and just because one company closes the position doesn’t mean someone else will close their doors to your expertise. Own it, and remind yourself that you’re valuable at whatever it is you’re good at.

People Love You – When someone loves you, even just your family, and you lose a job they still love you! Remind yourself that, because the old adage is true, “you’re a nobody until somebody loves you”. This is something that many forget when they are given the pink slip at work. Remind yourself that you have family and they love you and are rooting for your success. Bouncing back is easier when someone is there for you, so embrace them and they will feed you the encouragement you need to restore your self esteem.

Never Stop Searching – Once you are let go, make sure that you get unemployment immediately and start the job hunt again. Even if it takes you time to get another position, make sure that you’re wise with your money and you invest in yourself. If you have to take a lesser pay at first, that’s ok, it will help your self esteem to get back into the workforce and after some time you will be able to make a lateral move if not higher.

Losing a job is tough, but in these uncertain times it can be inevitable, so to combat the emotional deluge that is going to come through, consider the above ideas and you will rise above anything.
