How to Keep Yourself Occupied During a Long Flight
If you’ve ever embarked on an hours-long flight, then you understand just how important it is to keep yourself occupied on the plane. With airlines cutting back their services, you can no longer bank on watching an in-flight movie. And, even if you do happen to be flying one of the few airlines that still provides this perk, there’s no guarantee that they’ll be playing a movie you’re even interested in watching. Boarding the plane without a contingency plan could prove dangerous. Are you really willing to risk losing your sanity because of a screaming child or an overly friendly neighbor? If not, then make sure you’re prepared to keep yourself occupied on your journey.
Catch Up on Your Reading
If you’re like most passengers on a plane, you can probably get at least a half-hour’s worth of entertainment out of your complimentary issue of SkyMall. However, after you’ve skimmed the magazine once, you’ve probably had enough of looking at bizarre products with questionable practical applications. Don’t let yourself get stuck in the SkyMall rut; come prepared with reading materials you’ll actually get some enjoyment out of. Depending on your personal preferences, this may include a couple of fashion magazines, a copy of your local paper, or a new best-seller. Whatever you choose, make sure your reading materials will hold your attention for an extended period of time.
Enjoy one of Your Favorite Hobbies
Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to partake in their favorite hobbies in-flight. (Can you imagine a plane full of passengers practicing their karate moves, singing in harmony, and doing whatever else it is that they enjoy? Oh, the madness!) However, if you happen to enjoy a hobby that can be easily performed at your seat (without disturbing those around you), then a lengthy flight may provide the ideal time to sharpen up your skills. Some hobbies that can be easily performed on a plane include knitting, doing crossword puzzles and other brain teasers, playing solitaire and other single-player card games, making jewelry, drawing, and writing poetry.
Watch Your Favorite Movie
While the in-flight movies of yesteryear may not appeal to your unique preferences, the movie you play on your personal viewing device or laptop can! If you plan on watching a movie, keep in mind that there are certain things that your neighbors may not enjoy. Though it may seem like a no-brainer, be sure not to choose a movie with any nudity or steamy sex scenes. You may want to also refrain from playing a movie with excessive violence or that’s particularly gruesome. And, it may go without saying, but be sure to bring along some headphones.
Write a Letter
These days, with computers and cellular phones, it’s pretty rare to receive a handwritten letter from a friend or family member. Just think how delighted you’d be to receive a card or a sincerely written note from a loved one! The excuse many individuals give for not being able to send handwritten letters is a lack of time. Well, when you’re on a long flight, all you’ve got is time. In fact, you might even have time to write letters to several of your friends and family members.
Whether you’re flying from London to Tampa or from Tampa to Las Vegas, your flight is sure to go a lot more quickly if you occupy your time with something you enjoy. While you may not particularly like reading, knitting, watching a movie, or writing a letter, you must enjoy some activity that can make your flight a little less tedious. Safe (and painless) travels to you!
