Scalp Exfoliation – What Are the Benefits?
Regularly exfoliating your scalp has the same benefits as regularly exfoliating your face or body. Your scalp is skin and should be cared for the way you care for the skin on your face and the rest of your body. A healthy scalp is the foundation for strong healthy hair growth and removing dead cells, cleaning and unblocking your hair follicles will go a long way to keeping your scalp healthy.
The benefits of exfoliating include;
1. Blood circulation is increased in the scalp. This is important because the blood carries essential nutrients to your hair follicles where the nutrients are actually required
2. Dead skin cells are removed during exfoliation allowing new healthy cells to become visible. While this may not be visible to anyone, unless you’re bald, as it is when you’ve had a face scrub, your scalp will certainly feel softer
3. As dead skin cells are removed, regeneration of new cells is initiated
4. During exfoliation, your hair follicles are scrubbed clean of any dirt, sebum and chemical build up blocking them giving your hair strands room to grow to their thickest width. Why is this important? The simple logic behind that a thicker strand of hair is more resilient to breakage than thin wispy strand of hair
5. People who exfoliate regularly have healthier scalps and are less prone to infections such as dandruff
Exfoliation can be performed as part of your regular hair care routine after your hair has been washed. It can be done using a brush designed for removing dirt and dead cells from the scalp or with an exfoliating scrub. Scrubs usually have granules which can be made of natural ingredients such as apricots, or with chemicals such as salicylic acid. They are formulated to gently remove dirt and dead cells safely. Frequency of use will depend on the product or method used. Following the manufacturer’s advice is always recommended. Scrubs designed for the scalp can be found in hair care stores and online.
If you decide to go down the scrub route, then make sure it designed specifically to be used on the scalp. Scrubs designed for the face and body will not produce effective results.
When purchasing a scalp scrub from an online retailer, always read other customer reviews first to see what experiences they have had with the product. Some reviews focus on the retailer selling the product. While you want ensure the retailer is reputable and will send your order out in a timely manner, focus on the reviews about the product itself and whether other users say it works or not. Sometimes these reviews contain other helpful tips on using the product. Definitely avoid any products that have a high proportion of bad reviews.
After your hair has been thoroughly cleansed and your skin exfoliated, you can apply a hair mask or a leave in hair treatment. It is an ideal time to apply a treatment now because it will be better able to penetrate into the hair shafts and follicles. If a mask is applied, then as usual your hair should be thoroughly rinsed afterwards.
