Contrary to popular belief Galileo did not invent the telescope. The earliest known scope appeared in 1608 and is credited to Hans Lippershey from the Netherlands. He discovered that holding two lenses up some distance apart brought objects closer together. However the term ”telescope” was coined by Prince Frederick Sesi in 1611 at a reception where Galileo is demonstrating his instruments. After hearing that the device had been invented, Galileo built several telescopes to study the heavens. He dared to publish his findings and was nearly burned at the stake for it.

Today there are three basic types of telescope, refractors, reflectors, and catadioptrics. Refracting telescopes use two lenses to collect, focus and magnify more light than is otherwise possible with just the naked eye. Whilst reflecting telescopes use a system of mirrors to do the same. A catadioptric telescope is a hybrid of both with its name being derived from its components; lenses on refractor telescopes are diotropics, curved mirrors are known as catoptrics.
