Should I Hire a Fence Contractor Or Should I Do it Myself?
Having a new fence put up can be really expensive. The raw materials itself could run into anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollars depending on the type of material you\’re purchasing and where you\’re purchasing from.
As a result, most people resort to installing fences on their own in order to save money on the installation. If you\’re thinking of having a fence installed and are wondering between whether you should hire a fence contractor or do it yourself, please pay close attention here.
The answer to your question would be a Yes and a No. There are some people who can easily install their fence because they have some prior installation experience.
Even those without enough experience can install a fence on their own if they can follow the instruction manual that comes from the manufacturer and try things out. But in some cases, the best thing to do is to delegate the job of installing a fence to a contractor who knows what he\’s doing.
If you meet the following criteria, feel free to do the fence installation yourself…
1. Have the equipment
There are many different kinds of equipment that you need to have a fence installed such as an auger (for digging holes), concrete mixer and so on. You don\’t have to necessarily purchase them. All you need to do is to rent it from a store or borrow it from a friend for a day or two. But if you hire a fencing contractor, he\’ll already have the equipment with him and will bring it along to install it for you.
2. Have installed a similar fence or seen the installation
If you\’ve installed such a fence in the past or have seen the installation in action, you may want to give this DIY project a try. You may be successful especially if the fence you\’re installing is a vinyl fence and you can follow the installation manual closely.
Other fence types such as wood and aluminum require expertise. We don\’t recommend installing such fences yourself unless you have installed one before.
3. Have experience in carpentry
If you\’ve worked in a couple of woodworking projects and have some experience in general carpentry and plumbing, you may really enjoy this project.
You\’ll be able to easily have the entire fence installed quickly by following the instruction manual. It won\’t be much of a deal if you’ve worked with augers, concrete mixers, etc earlier.
4. Have the time
The most important aspect is your time. How many hours can you devote to fencing installation? Installing a fence isn\’t a one hour job.
You need to dig the holes, set the post, apply concrete and wait for a couple of days before completing the fencing. So make sure that you can devote at least 3 – 6 hours for the job (depending on your level of expertise).
In the end, don\’t give up and quit. If you\’re not confident, it is always better to hire a contractor.
The most challenging part of a fence installation is the digging of postholes. The postholes need to be evenly spaced and leveled. Even the slightest mistake could cause the fence to lose its balance and seem crooked.
Your fence\’s durability will be affected regardless of the quality of the material you use. In that case, your only choice is hire a fence contractor.
We strongly recommend that you only choose to install the fence yourself if you meet the criteria mentioned above or else consider consulting a fence contractor and having him take care of the installation.
